They definitely came with Y series engines in the mid to late 80's, dunno if it was a 4Y-C though.

yeah my old man has a 88, its got a 3Y-C, long in the tooth now, he wants to know if he can put a 4Y in without engineering.

Dunno about NSW, but in QLD a swap like that is piss-easy to get legal. When I swapped the 6M into my Supra, an engineer came over and had a quick look, noted the engine number, and riveted a modification plate to the firewall. Cost about $100 and took 20 minutes or so.
