Pulled apart the front diff from our 1984 Nissan Patrol Turbo Diesel to find the bearing looking bizarre.

the bearing is perfect but look at the cup. My old man says he hasnt seen anything like this in the 25 yrs spent as a mechanic. These marks are also on the cups of all the other bearings in the diff yet the actual bearings are perfect.

we suspect the diff has had a HUGE hit at one point in its life.

Can anyone comment further on this?? (yes we know they need to be replaced Rolling Eyes )

Why do I feel like I have significantly supported Carlton+United Brewery after looking at that pic?

It looks like more than just a big hit even - those marks seem to be a little too well formed. How deep are they?

over-tightened? or ran out out of lube? or both? ... were probably too lazy to replace the cups when they pulled the damaged roller bearings out?

i agree with the thechuckster...

thechuckstera; this is a bit off topic but your home page should start to read optusnet and not optushome... we are going to phase out optushome domain name so to save you the hassel later start using optusnet for your website and email address Smile

I would say the free wheeling hubs have been unlocked and the patrol has done a lot of mileage in 2wd this allows the bearings to be stationary and the normal vibration of driving without the bearings turning will cause the bearings to wear into the cups .
