Shell has been located, didn't take as long as I thought! An RA65 has come my way and I'm going to use an F-series rear end (F293) out of a MA61 Supra, both found off the private sales section of these forums. Work on the shell will commence once I have some spare time, TAFE and two other Celicas are currently soaking up all my energy

Well after getting some quotes and looking around at the amount of work required to turn this thing into a decent road beast I've decided to scrap the TA-23 and start with something better. So yes, a few things are for sale now (calipers, struts power steering box) which has wiped some stuff off my budget, but now I need a new shell. Part of the reasoning behind getting the SA-63 or RA-65 shell is for starters it has IRS. Secondly they are on average 8 years younger than a '23 shell and usually much MUCH less rusty.
Next on the parts order list (aside from a shell) is a MegaSquirt ECU to go with the 5S-GE. Will update again when I have a shell to work with.
Oh did I mention it's going to be built up as a drift beast?

Reasonably pointless update. Went down to U-Pull-It to search for a rear end, now that I've decided I want a F312 or F292. Had no luck this time around but did manage to find a W55 gearbox and SA63 clutch + bell-housing. Yes!!! So I've added that on to the money spent so far. I wanted to get pics of things coming together but was too busy hunting for parts to haul the camera out. Hopefully tomorrow I'll get a chance.

Like He-Man has the power, I have the calipers! Took them off of EMP-2TG for $250, all too easy (now to adjust my sig to contain another friendly trader). Started stripping out the interior, found some pretty bad rust in the chassis rail (like a great big hole in it!) so that's going to be pretty expensive to fix but to be honest alot of the panels only require a bit of major work and a respray - at least they don't all need replacing though! I'll try and find some rust-free replacement panels but aside from that it's going to be a case of cutting out the rust and welding in non-rust.
A few new pics to come up soon.

No exciting news, just picked up some XT130 struts - hope they are the right ones for the 4-pot front brake upgrade! Looking into custom pistons at the moment, money has started flowing back my way so expect a few more updates before the end of the year. Probably the next thing I'll shell out for will be body fixing. Then maybe I'll start work on mock-up engine assembly and installation.
Going to get some calipers off of a hilux soon.
My plan for the car is changing a little though, hopefully turn it into a bit of a cruising car. First is to get all the mechanical stuff finished as quick as possible, then I will start tidying the interior and installing comfy stuff

Okay, I got my hands on a MX-36 power steering box - I have a spare ST162 power-steer pump lying around so all I have to do is make up the mounts for that, and plumb it all together.
I grabbed a 2S sump and oil-pickup, and east-west cross-member all from an SA-63. I'll just use the cross-member for reference/fabrication purposes (as previously stated I think). The next thing I need to get is an SA-63 bellhousing, and I'll probably pick up a new clutch for an SA-63 as well. As soon as I start getting some more work again hopefully I'll start restoring the body, a bit of cutting out of rust and strengthening (stitch welding) is probably all I'll do.
To solve the distributor-hitting-firewall problem I am going to use a coil-pack distributorless ignition...the only problem to sort out then is some kind of CAS (I think), I'll make a date with and auto-electrician to sort out that one. I'm still not sure what ECU I will use, again I'll sort that out soon.
I will use a 3S-GTE intake manifold - although slightly modified so that it wont punch a hole in the bonnet, the other option is to modify the bonnet, but I understand that will have it's own legal complications. Altogether things are starting to get sorted out in my head, just a matter of getting them done.

Well, okay, maybe it isn't an SA23 yet, but I've recently been attacking various new(er) school celicas in an attempt to get enough parts together for my new baby (which will be my everyday road car, while my soon-to-arrive GT4 will fill the 'rally car' requirement of my collection).
Plans are to get a 5S crank/block and mate it with a 3SGE head. Sounds simple enough, but there are obviously bits that I'm still working out. I'm hoping to do this in a 'cost-effective' manner and get good bang for buck!.
So what's left to be sorted out? Good question, being RWD the intake manifold from the ST162 just won't do, I'm thinking of finding maybe an ST182 or ST184 manifold as I believe the throttle body is in a more friendly position - of course then the engine height will be a problem. The fuel rail and injectors should be good enough for the amount of power I am after, I will check a flow-rate chart from when I got my other ST162 injectors cleaned just to make sure that the ST162 injectors are up to about 120kw at the fly (they should be!!!).
I will have a look at some exhaust manifolds just to see if I can find a good enough flowing one for cheap, but otherwise it'll be time to drag out the wallet and blow the budget for a custom one.
I'd like to do some vague amount of cylinder head work as well, things like camshaft, (ports, valves)...but being 'budget' I'll definitely do things on a 'bang for buck' basis. Being NA though, head work is the best bang-for-buck modification, I expect at least the cam-shafts will be different profile, possibly modify the cam-gears for more adjustability.
I haven't even got to all the important 'nitty' gritty details of doing an engine conversion. Just got some engine parts and a body that is on it's way to neat-ness. This will be my first attempt at an engine conversion so I expect it will go slowly and not-so-surely.
I am planning to do the wiring myself, and most of the work myself except for that which requires specialist equipment (fabrication and some of the engine work for example).

Yeah, just happened to have a few parts lying around that I couldn't figure out what to do with Had the '23 for years, and the 5S-GE was going into the ST162 before I got my heart set on an ST165...

Minor update - grabbed an SA63 cross member today for comparison/fabrication purposes...also got a starter motor, clutch + flywheel and the sump/oil pickup etc. Here's hoping the oil-pickup will bolt onto the 5S block (it looks like it will no problems from quick inspection - the oil-pump housing appears to be the same). Cost $121 for all those little bits, need the bellhousing now, and I'm thinking about adapting some form of steering rack too.

If anyone has any early (MX-3x ????) Cressida power steering boxes lying around just let me know I'm going to guess that a cressida steering box conversion for a TA-23 will be alot simpler than a steering rack. My current steering box is totally rooted...driving at anything about 40km/h can only be described as hazardous unless you have arms quicker than (pre-death) bruce lee.
At the moment I've got my eye on a bellhousing - I just need to get to it before someone else does at a U-Pull-It. Hopefully I'll find a suitable steering box soon enough. Does anyone have any idea if a 3S power steering pump will work with a cressida power steer box? I'm pretty dopey in this area, what do I need to consider when looking for a compatible pump?

Budget is slowly exploding...

Itll be good to watch your progress on this.
The 3S-G head on the 5S block and getting it in the car will be quite interesting.
Youll have all the problems of a RWD 3S conversion plus some.
Keep us updated

Oh - you'll notice on the yamaha cast head that the number of bolt type plug type things along the spark plugs numbers three (two big ones, one small one), as opposed to the two that are on the head as cast by toyota. As far as I can tell, they are 'mechanically' identical ie the ports are the same, valves and cam gear are all the same etc etc. They are just cast different.
What exactly are those plug type things for anyway?

So I'm after an SA63 shell (or something similar, just a sedan xA6x celica body) for a drift beast. The TA-23 would've been nice but the shell is too whack and it's getting REALLY hard to find a decent nick 22/23/25/28 shell for a reasonable price. I'll update this again as soon as I have sourced a body, and hopefully/finally the engine will be under way.
