What general differences are there bwtween these two engines. Both are similar/same capacity. Does one of these engines stand out for "tinkering" being a better design, more robust ect.

The MZ series engines are more modern than the VZ engines (1994 vs 1987), so that's a good indication right there. The biggest thing that sets them apart is the MZ is all alloy, while the VZ has a cast iron block, so obviously there's a big difference in overall weight. I've heard many horror stories about the reliability (or lack thereof) of the old VZ engines, but apparently the MZ is a vast improvement.
As for the tinkering aspect, I don't know of anyone who's put serious effort into modifying either of these engines so I can't say anything for sure, but the newer engines have more power and a better spread of torque from the factory floor, so chances are it's a better place to start if you want to tinker.

Oh maybee I shouldn't rev the motor at around 7000 rpm. I too have heard some stories about the motors, I thought the basic boreXstroke which I think is oversquare could take a fair serve.

Personally I prefer the VZ motors (low-down torque)as opposed to the MZ.I'm a lazy driver driver and would prefer not to have to change gears to get it moving

TVIS lived in the 1MZ. We didn't get the VVTi AFAIK that the US 1MZ got in the later 4th Gen which we did in the 5th.

in issue 75 of zoom, there is an article about a buggy with a twin turbo 1MZFE. for a while they ran it stock with twin T25 turbos and medium low boost... had bout 150KW at the wheels, and that was not pushing it at all....
they built the motor with some new innards and some GT25 and made like 450 or something KW...
they are used pretty often for race engines in the states too...
they have certainly got some potential, as for mile mods, i got NFI really
hope that helps somewhat...
