steering rack troubles! Mon, 26 July 2004 00:51 Go to next message
hi guys,

I'm in the process of replacing the barrel and cast alloy ignition housing on my steering rack (car was broken into). I managed to get my hands on a complete steering rack, and i'm having troubles getting this ignition casing off the main part of the rack. I have already unscrewed the 2 hex bolts and grinded off the grub screw, but after many attempts of pulling and twisting, it seems as if it was not meant to come off so easily. Do i need to remove the entire shaft? If so, how?

Or do i have to dread replacing the whole rack from steering wheel to end pinion? Rolling Eyes

There is a really small circlip on the shaft, really really tight. Took me a few times to get it off the first time, But once you have practice its ok.
From then on off its pretty tight, but just lever it off slowly with progressively bigger screwdrivers.

Edit: its covered by a metal plate with 3 screws holding it to the ignition barrel module.

Yes, under that plate. Right up next to the bearing there is a circlip.

so basically i just use a small flathead and try to wedge that circlip out and the ignition key unit should slide off the shaft?

So i'm gathering that this circlip is a round 'circular clip' that i need to grab out with pliers?

From what i saw, there was not much space (if any) is this all that needs to be removed ?
