GT4 insurance. Does this sound good?

Hey all, as you probably don't know, I'm pretty much set on buying an ST185 GT4 in a couple of months. I went to the Just Car Insurance website and chucked together a quote for full comp insurance (20yo driver, garaged in Bulleen, few typical mods, etc.) and the figure I was quoted for a 1990 model, was $1600! Is it just me or does that sound way too cheap?! Not that I'm complaining, if that's true, then I'm basically sold on it! RACV wanted $2.5k in comparison, and thats without listing any mods!

Just Car Insurance seem to offer competitive premiums, but in my experience the insured value offered for most cars is a little bit low (perhaps using Red Book figures?). That said, something like about 2% of all accidents actually involve a writeoff, so to be honest I think people place a little (well, a lot) too much emphasis on the insured value offered. Not only is it unlikely you'll have a claim, it's unlikely that if you do your car will actually be a writeoff!
Seems a good premium, just have a read through their policy wording and see that you're happy with it. I know their legal liability cover is only $5 million or $10 million, where a lot of the direct major insurers offer $20 million. If your vehicle is/will be under secured finance, they may require a certain level of liability cover.
Also, one final thing to note is that you commented about "not listing" mods. For anyone that doesn't know - NOT LISTING MODIFICATIONS DOES NOT MEAN THAT THEY ARE NOT COVERED BY YOUR INSURANCE. NOT LISTING THEM MEANS THAT YOUR INSURANCE IS VOID AND YOU DO NOT HAVE ANY COVER AT ALL.
Cheers
Leigh

Yes, I do know that and have experienced it first hand. If you read the post again, I DO NOT own the car yet, so my insurance quotes are only as a guide, and I was trying to point out that RACV wanted $2.5k to insure a STOCK GT4, any listed mods would obviously add to the premium (again, as I have experienced first hand). My point was that Just Cars were much cheaper, even with my "hypothetical" mods listed. (I.e. the ones I would be most likely to add to my car)

Check the excess on Just cars - sometimes they have good rates but a high excess (e.g $400 std excess, additional $400 theft excess). I found them pretty cheap too ($700 for full comprehensive on a modified ma70 (1jz)), but their insured values are lower. I never had to make a claim though. Plus you have to pay annually, not monthly.
They do cover mods as long as they are listed.

You took my comment out of context. The full paragraph was:

I was clarifying this so that anyone reading this thread didn't get any dumb ideas in their head.

I thought you directed it at others at first, but I just saw the "you commented about..." then LOTS OF CAPS!! So i thought it was to me
Never mind, no hard feelings
Lumpy: Yeah the excesses are high, $450 or something plus $400 age excess, plus an additional $300 or something! But i'd rather have high excesses, as it's not often you have "at fault" claims anyway I guess. Plus I'll be careful

Check Shannons they matched my just cars offer and had heaps better excess, payots and agreed values.
They said they won't look at a regular GT4, but you really did want a grpA anyways didn't you?

Shannons are funny - they insure my " regular st185 Gt4 " under full modified insurance ( more mods than a group A had factory ) and im still dearer than just cars quote that tooch got
25yo rating one - 1 claim good record ..
i think Just car's quote seems a little cheap for your age bracket.
Also shannons dont like insuring 20 yo's with turbo cars - yet alone under 21 yo's at all for full coverage

yours is a " grey import " joel - thats probably why they didnt want to touch it ..
i had to clearly specify mine was an AUS SPEC gt4 not a grey import - but ironically they were still happy to cover it

Yeah I really do want a group A, if I can find one for a decent price. I saw a really clean, low km's, beautiful example go for $14999 at a dealer
I'll be happy with a normal GT4 tho!
I guess the price of the quote I got is reflected in the higher excess

$1600 for a 20 yr old for a GT4?
Sounds pretty good to me.
I remember getting quoted $2500 to insure a Subaru RX Turbo when I was 23. Not even in the same league as a GT4.
I was recently paying $1600 for my import Caldina fwd turbo DIESEL with Just Cars.
BTW I'm 31, rating 1 since I was 24.
Recently switched to Shannons for $1200 (and in the process of making a $13000 claim)
Expect high excesses until you're 25 anyway, you're in the "high risk" group (under 25 male. well, I'm guessing you're a male)
I was paying only $700 for my old Legacy GT tho (through a 4wd broker)
