You will NEED a bigger carby. And a different cam is cheap performance. Also, try and lighten the flywheel a bit. Also, get new valve springs. Old ones can let the engine valve bounce bad, and effectively reduce your rpm by heaps. I recomend electronic ignition of some sort. If you run points, make sure they are new and change them at least every 3 months.
I will let others tell you of specific head/piston combo to use to get the compression you want. All the different generation pistons are different. Welsh plug 3K head will have the biggest valves, and give good compression on a 4K.

cam, compression, exhaust, porting, carb, EFI etc all spring to mind... in fact, exactly the same as you do to any motor you want to get more power from.
4K or 5K block could help, but for my budget dollar, 4K block with 3K head, mild cam, a bit of porting and a 1.75" exhaust will do well..
for a bit more poke, 4K block, 3K head, ported well, 235@50thou cam, 430-450thou lift, dual valve springs and machined rocker towers, tuned extractors, 2" exhaust.
thats about as far as you'd want to go in a street motor.
for race spec, google for TOSCO manual for the 3K.
