does anyone have pictures of any liftback celi sporting a flat black paint job? kind of short on money and the paint jobs not on the priority list. any thoughts about it? maintenance? would the the flat color hide imperfections in the body?

Flat paint is the crappest paint ever on a car. Sure, it'll hide imperfections but it'll reveal the biggest imperfection of all - shitty fucking flat black paint. It won't be very durable at all.

Actually dark matte colours will highlight imperfections.

I suggest painting the car with chalkboard paint. It's black, matt, can be applied with a brush and would provide a large functional writing surface.

The chalkboard paint is a good idea, that way you can change your shopping list on the side whenever you want! and no need to buy any more stickers.

Flat black would look good, but dont think of it as a cheap soloution.

flat black sucks- it looks 'decent' for 15mins.

paint it in that hammerite 'hammered metal' finish! that'll hide imperfections alright- and you can do it by brush!.
i've always wanted to see someone do it!

I've seen an old Galant painted in Gunmetal Grey Hammer finish - it looked pretty funny - hid a few imperfections but in the end was a shitty finish.

How does flat paint show more impections than gloss paint?. I'm going by the theory that imperfections are noticable as changes in the texture of the painted the surface, usually leading to changes is gloss. As gloss paint reflects the incident light in a fairly straight line, and flat paint scatters incident light (hence the flatness) everything I've seen points to flat paints hiding surface imperfections much better than gloss.

You'll probably have to buy 10 spray paint cans...it's probably just as cheap to buy 4 litres of enamel paint and a paint brush, shouldn't cost more than $30!

matt black paint is CHEAP!
i payed $70 for 20L (yes a 20 Liter drum of GMH black)
it does cover imperfections as long as it isnt a change in texture ( like rough bog or paint wrinkling)
my old TA22 was done in Matt black and it looked alot better than the brushed on red enamel it had when i got it.

BTW: done ever use enamel paint on your car if you want to paint it properly later. theres compatibility issues with acrylic and 2pac

http://www.users.on.net/~vanede/Matt%20Black%20TA2 2.jpg
56K warning 870Kb pic

theres a link to a pic of my celica. you wouldnt know the lower 1/2 of the car is a bit lumpy with bog and rust etc.

that was the day after it was painted but it didnt start to get dodgy looking for over 6 months. like other paint it does need regular washing to stay looking nice.

chalk board paint is a novel idea, if you dont take our car too seriously do it Very Happy

I am sure if he's asking about matt black paint, he doesn't want to go to the expense of doing it in 2-pac.

Enamel is nasty paint in my opinion, but it's cheap and looks okay for a little while.
