Engines to fit my W55 Wed, 28 July 2004 05:55 Go to next message
Hi guys, I need to know what engines will fit onto my W55 that is in my 91 Hilux Ute. At the moment there is a 4Y in it and I want to replace it with a twin cam 2L injected four, something similar to a 90 or so corona? any help much appreciated Smile

18R-GE. does your box have a detachable bellhousing? i get confused what does and what doesn't. if you want six cylinder power, get a 1G-GTE. that would probly be better, cuz it goes ppppssssshhh!!!!! Very Happy

I take it that the 18R-GE is DOHC 1.8L four.....
The reason I wanted a four is that hopefully it will sit in about the place in the engine bay and I wont have to move the radiator and other bits and pieces about.

18R-GE is 2 litre, fuel injected twin-cam four. 1G-GTE is a compact 2 litre, fuel-injected twin-cam twin turbo six. i don't reckon you'd have to move your radiator.
the 18R-GE would be a bit simpler than the 1G-GTE though, but both would bolt up to your box i think. 18R-GE has about 150 horsies, the 1G-GTE has about 210.

i dont know what the laws are like in NZ for engine swaps, but here in Australia you must put an equal or newer motor into the car. You cannot put an older motor in.

With a 1991 hilux - your best option is a gen 3 1G-GTE. These DO bolt in with relative ease, and will match up to your W55 (they came with a W58, which is externally the same, just stronger internally)

Have a look at the article on www.toymods.org.au regarding 1G-GTE conversions and motors. Grant's article will best help explain the version you need.

Heaps of guys over here have them, most making above 120kW at the rears with gen3's.

No such worries over here, put whatever you want wherever you want as long as you do it properly. But apparently emissions stuff WILL be coming in soon. May become an issue then.

Missing from that list is the 3S-GE, which is a DOHC 2 litre 4 cylinder and will bolt up to a W55. Probably not the best option for a Hilux but it could be done.

Persoanlly, I'd go for a 1J or maybe a 1G.

Why restrict yourself so much in engine choice by only choosing 2L twincams?

I'd look at all the possibilties first then make up your mind about the type of engine you want.

Sure you might want a 2L twincam but after some investigation you might find that its cheaper and easier to use a different engine configuration and make the same or even nmore power.

i've seen a hilux( actually a lolux) with a holden 253 in it, as far as i know, there's no such rule about engine age, but there is "guidelines" on how big a motor you can have without other mods such as brake upgrades. for example, any corona mark 2 can have up to a 3.3l engine without other mods(2jz-gte, evil laugh hahahahahahaha!), also, a hilux can have up to a 4.2l engine without other mods(note the 253, or maybe a 1uz, evil laugh hahahahahahaha!)
