icon5.gif  What causes battery acid splash? Fri, 13 September 2002 02:52 Go to next message
Hey guys, might seem like a simple enough question to answer, but I really have no idea. I have an NRMA emergency battery sitting in my (RAV4) engine bay, and I've done nothing to it since it was installed about 6 months ago. Only reason it was installed was because the orig. battery sh!t itself, overflowed with battery acid and wouldn't crank.

Now I have this NRMA battery and I'm having the same problem, but on a lesser scale. It's still spewing small amounts of battery acid onto the left side of the firewall. Sad

Aside from the obvious answer (get a decent battery), who knows what could be causing this, and how can it be remedied?

Cheers. Smile

An overflowing battery is usually a result of an overheated battery, which causes the acid to boil. This is turn is usually the result of a faulty alternator (or more accurately, the voltage regulator). Take it to an auto sparky, he'll know what to do.

I took it to a sparky in Lismore today, and he said that the voltage regulator is actually over-efficient, and if I had it replaced it would probably do the same thing. What he said could have been the problem is that the battery was too small for the job, considering I have foglights and 170-series LightForce spotties as well (battery-sapper's), and that if I have the spotties on for a while (like 5-10 minutes), the alternator is charging and charging the battery, and as a consequence is quite possibly overcharging the battery making the liquid in the cells boil and splash anything in range through the vent holes in the plugs.

I've been advised to get a bigger battery, one with possibly 9 plates, or a small 11-plate battery instead. Also the same CCA rating or around that area too (390).

Thanks for your post, Norbie. Smile

Thanks for the info on the batteries... I was thinking of an Oddessy but I simply can't afford it... I need a good battery to run a big sound system, spotties and of course the car... Are there any batteries that would do with no worries that are under the $150 mark???

I have a dual battery setup in my TA22. I use a standard battery to start the car and I have a big $120 battery to run the stereo. The dual setup looks factory fitted in the engine bay. Funny enough both batteries were chucked out last week. They were getting old and didn't want to run the risk of them leaking. I'm now in the market for two new batteries. I dunno what I'm gunna buy yet, but the last ones were Century. Let me know what you end up getting and how much they cost.

What about simply getting the biggest battery you can fit in (under bonnet or in the boot). My Supra fortunately swallows up a 4WD battery, which apparently are made "better" to cope with vibration/shock. They cost just a bit more than normal car ones, not the $300 for a spiral cell type.
