Fuel Pressure (PSI) Thu, 29 July 2004 22:30 Go to next message
Does anyone know the standard fuel pressure for the Gen.III (94-99) 3S-GTE? Since installing this 500hp fuel pump it's been 'pulsing' fuel through the regulator I got the other day, and not giving a smooth flow. I had a gauge hooked up off it and it's reading 55Psi where it would normally be around 35-40Psi instead. Anyone know for sure? Confused

What could be causing this? Return line too small (diameter)?

The standard presure should only be 40psi so my guess is that your return line is to small>

Yup, some sort of restriction after the fuel rail, which could possibly be the return line. A good way to check is to run a fuel hose directly off the FPR into a jerry-can or similar. Start the engine and watch the fuel pressure, if it remains steady you've found your problem!

Well it wasn't the return line. That was already sussed out apparently. We got her running smoothly now, except when we give her a rev, she pops (a lot). Confused Anyone had this problem either?

Another problem may be the orifice in the reg being too small (my money would be on that). Considering you've put a 500 hp pump on a 2L engine I wouldn't be surprised. The 'pulsing' behaviour you're describing would suggest that to me. There are two options to consider-

1. Fit a second reg of the same type to the rail.
2. Fit a reg off a larger engine (it will have a bigger orifice)

How goes the turbo RAV-4 anyway mate?

Firstly, the regulator isn't mounted directly to the fuel rail, even though the instructions say that it can be done. Whatever the reason is, it's remotely mounted (firewall, above the throttle body) and now has a 145Psi/1000kPa pressure gauge mounted on it. It's not pulsing anymore... it's running smoothly, but there's something gone awry with the ignition. Confused I checked the coil/CDI setup with Gary Georgiou and his ST205, everything was peachey there. No pops or cold idle fluctuations to be seen, unlike mine. This leads us to believe it may be something to do with spark or leads. Does anyone have any useful input on this?
