You can imagine the people getting caught, the nthinking "what can I do about this...."

Funny this was brought up, this will suprise a few people. A friend of mine is good friends with a polics ossifer, there like family friends. and apparently that set speed cameras have only a certain range to pic up speeding cars eg. a 70 zone the camera would pic up from 70 to say 110kms so if u push more than that it wont pick u up.
so he says, ne 1 willing to try it out??

i cant vouch for that story but it would make sense...
the first time i put a worked cam in the ra65 i came screaming down old gympie road at 140km/h and went straight past a camera setup, the camera didnt flash at me so i didnt really notice it until i was right up alongside it, out of the corner of my eye..."what tha..."
still havnt received a fine, maybe the camera was out of film ??

Is that the fixed one at the bottom of the hill?
If so, I think that is not in commission anymore. It seems all rusted out and stuff.
Plus one night I thought I'd have a laugh as a crappy laser screamed past me @ 100 while I was doing ~80 because I knew a camera was there, but no flash. bummer.

Has anyone seen the static camera at the airport tunnel go off??? I'm suprised they are allowed to put it there considering the amount of reflective structures around. Each camera site has to be researched and approved and have no structures in the immediate vicinity (such as the Shark Park one) My guess is that the airport one is there to keep the drags through the tunnel to a minimum and are not operational. Somebody can test that theory if they like.

The fixed speed cameras in Sydney use road sensors, not radar, so don't go testing that theory in court

eek!
well that would explain it. That makes more sense and now jobs my memory. My brother told me about approved sites you can setup a camera but I remember he was talking about the camera cars.
Anybody know what type of sensor it uses?

I've heard something about this too, however i was told that the cameras won't function only once you go above something like 180km/h (or some such figure - anyway, it was pretty high).
And NO I'm not willing to try it out!!

i assume speed cameras the world over are pretty much the same bits of kit so check out www.speedtrap.co.uk for info on all the stuff the cops use to stop you having fun. Its mainly or uk drivers but some of the info has got to be useful for people in other countries

hey les
i think he meant the attendant that sits in the van and supposedly watches the camera !
ive walked past one of these setups before and to my dismay the cop was just reading a newspaper while the camera makes a shitload of money and now the cops are whinging that they dont get paid enough.....guess where the money is coming from to fund the pay increase !!....either registration or fines or increase in the tax on fuel....
i choose all of the above

oh.... they are talking about raodside MANNED speed cameras (ie, a camera with a person supposedly controlling it) NOT the fixed permanent un-manned speed cameras we have scattered around sydney here.
Yes paul is right, they used sensors in the road. 3 Ultrasonic sensors to be precise. On some of them (eg the one on james ruse drv just after the bridge) you can see three strips running across the road... thats where the sensors are placed, and there is one set of sensors for each lane so you cant hide from them
most of the new ones also dont have flash, they are Infra red from memory.... or something like that....

get me some plates and we'll test the theory in the cressida on the m4 lol....
i once saw a guy on a bike lift the front wheel high up in the air and stick his finger up at the camera on the m4 it was an absolute clasic!!!!(the camera did go off)
anyone ever notice that the camera's actually cause probs i seen very near accidents from ppl sloeing down qwickly before them...
another classic was seeing a cop set up a few hundred meters after the camera and pulling up ppl that were speeding up after passing it...

I see something like that here every weekend! On the Bruce HWY they setup a speed camera and then they have another one setup just a few hundred meters up the road! I remember seeing one guy go through the first one and he must of got pissed off so he speed up and got done again! He must of been pissed after that! But he kept speeding!

I once speeded through a red light camera in my BMW but that was months ago, still haven't got a letter.
those damm coppers, one morning on Gympie road along the Kedron and asply streach I saw three speed cameras in a row within about 1km, and there was two on the other side within 500m of each other,
Since I've slowed down and started obeying the speed limit I notice a lot more speed cameras

And that is their drawback.
Unlike the fear of god hitting you when a copper pulls you over, and you don't speed (for a while) after, after going through a camera, that doesn't really put the fear into you, so you just continue speeding. (Got caught, bah! Go faster, who cares now).

Where: M4 Sydney
Time: 8:30
Speed: 98.54 km/h
FARKIN shit myself lastnight... cop sitting on the side of the highway and as I said, I was going 98.54 km/h
Saw the pig, planted the brakes, and so did the semitrailer next to me and got away scott free.
Someone behind was not so lucky, they got done.
One thing to say here: FARKIN DANGEROUS TO HAVE COPS ON THE HIGHWAY !!! People who are speeding, who see cops WILL slam on the brakes and may potentially cause accidents.
What do you guys reckon ?

My friend was driving up a 70 zone (which it shouldn't be as they keep bringing the limit down, been no crashes either) and anyways, him and this guy in a Commonwhore were doing about 120kph alongside each other when they both saw a speed camera.
They knew if one of them moved out of sync with the other, they would both get done in the photo, so they kept going side by side...went past it and the camera didn't flash...maybe they do check a range...?
