your location says you are in Liverpool, so i dont quite know what "the pit" is (interstate term?)...
does the car need a blue slip or a pink slip?
does it blow lots of smoke?
is it really noisy?
do the brakes work?
does it have tread?
all lights work?
seatbelts work?
if it needs a blue slip, obviously it will need to a bit tidier.

it needs to be roadworthy. no oil leaks, brakes working, seatbelts working, lights all working, no illegal modifications, if you get a hard bastard all your emissions will have to be working too. make it tidy, go for your blue slip, if it fails you have two weeks to fix it and the second inspection is free, after that you have to pay again

it's illegal to drive an unregistered car on the road. you can legally drive it from your place of residence DIRECTLY TO the auvis inspection station, and then from an inspection station to an AUTHORISED repairer if it fails. don't go shopping, don't go to mcdonalds on the way, go straight between the two points, and keep paperwork with you in case the highway patrol pull you over. and you'll be uninsured so don't hit anyone or your life will be over. i heard a rumor that nsw now sells day passes, like qld, might be worth a call or email to the rta to find out
