ae82 carby to 4agze Sat, 14 September 2002 00:40 Go to next message
I was wondering how easy it would be to get an old 82 mod carby rolla and a half cut 4A-GZE and put them together. What sort of gear box can go into the 82 rolla? Does the one from the half cut go into it. What type of half cut do I ask for? (model car so all parts fit easy). A mate told me the wiring is all jap and it is pretty hard, and you are better off getting a EFI rolla and dropping a 4A-GZE into it. What do you guys think? I wanna buy the half cut from around $1800-$2000 and only pay under a $1000 for a pretty crapy rolla. Is going to be the next project.

AE82 3/4AC carby isnt to hard..
the 4AGE will bolt on exactly.. the gearbox with the gze will need some welding? but some people still use a standard GE gearbox with a gze..

Half cut will do you the engine bit.. you still need the fuel tank+pump+lines(probably best but not really required) this is the stuff you normaly wont get from a half cut.. and will set you back $250-300

the wiring is pretty easy.. you dont need anything cut or remade.. just take out the whole front dash/steering wheel pieces.. take out the old loom.. run the loom from the engine through a hole to the ecu (you can place this behind the bin/aircon area) the chassis loom needs to be done at the same time.. the engine wiring is pretty much the time.. just 2 wires need to be customised.. one from the battery to the coil.. but when you get your front cut.. its possible to use the front bonnet/engine wiring but.. its alot of work =p
ripping of panels and making it look neat..

So I could put the gear box that comes with the half cut in it, what about all the other running gear? like struts and brakes and stuff. Would the dash from half cut if into an AE82 and how do you hook up all your lights and headlights with the new gear? I am fairly good with that sort of stuff I am just wondering is it a case of retracing every wire to do so?

I did this swap about 12 years ago into my '88 SE ae82, using a stock ge.
Fitting the fuel lines (just the inlet one) was a pain. I used the original carby gearbox. Years later I thought about fitting the ge box that came with the motor and found it was LSD.
Wiring was easy- plug and play- but took a bit of time removing all the dash and refitting. All the lights etc work.
I had already fitted rear discs- straight bolt in, used the 4ac halfshafts / cv's and non-vented front discs. Changed them soon after.
Real TCs aren't that much more than carbys now, so not really worth it unless you want a 20v or gze.
