My 5sfe just died

I have a 92 SX Celica with 5sfe engine which just kicked the bucket at 190,000 klms. I need to either replace the engine or rebuild it. If anyone can offer some ideas on what to do with with it let me know.
Cheers!

Banging and rattling like crazy. Think it could be big end bearings. Plus the head never sounded too good either, very noisy.

fair enough
In the end itd be cheaper to buy another motor from a wrecker, but hey ur just replacing shit with shit.
Be safe and rebuild it (this is what i did to my 7mge), or put a 3sgte in

I would like to put a 3sgte in but i think the cost is going to be too high. Is there anything i can do to the 5sfe to beef it up or am i just wasting time. What about putting a 3sge in instead - is this an easy worthwhile conversion?

beefing up 5sfe = waste of time
To put in a 3sgte properly you'd be looking at about 7-8k i would think. Pending on whether or not you do the work!

Get 2nd Gen 3S-GE from either SW20 MR2 or from the ST182 (similar to your car) and stick that in - it should be alot cheaper than a 3S-GTE...your power will jump from 102kW to 117kW although your torque figure will be nearly the same...good thing though is that the redline gets bumped up another 1000rpm as well.
Sure it's not a turbo, but it'll be alot more fun to drive regardless, and it'll be about 1/6th the cost.

Sounds intersting...
If i go with a 3sge will i need wiring loom, ecu & all the other stuff to go with it, what about engine mounts and exhaust. Would i have to get a front cut or will i be able to get the motor and work it in with the existing loom etc.
Cheers

Engine + loom should be right...I'm not sure how different the loom is, they are pretty similar from the brief look I've had, but I wouldn't trust them to be the same. The ECU is fairly easy to replace, and whatever bits of loom do need to be changed won't be extensive either.

Oh yeah, the exhaust should be the same between the ST182 and ST184, but the MR2's exhaust might be different...either way you will probably be able to stick your current exhaust on. Secondly, the engine mounts are exactly the same, and your current gearbox will fit and should handle the 3SGE no problemo.

I've got a Simmilar Problem with the 3S-FE in My Camry and I want to Put an SW20 3S-GE in.... Will it Mate to My Existing Auto Transmission? I know I'm going to need to do the Loom and the ECU and the whole thing But The Upgrade from 87Kw to 117Kw or if I could Find one a 3S-GE from a SW-20 GT or Bathurst.. at 125Kw..... Definatly worth it....
Should there be any Problems Mating it to My Tranny or Am I gonna have to replace that too?
I'd Like to Eventually Upgrade it to a 5 Speed... but for now I just want to get it back on the road....
Any thoughts????

How'd you kill a 5s-Fe at 190,000km?????
Mine still feels fit + healthy at 243,000km bro, although it does tend to puff a whisp of blue smoke from a cold start....
Are you sure it's carked it? A visit from a mobile mechanic might just be worth the seventy-odd bucks if it's something simple and non-terminal
If you can't drive it, it won't cost anything to pull the engine out and see what the damage is. What was it like before it let-go?
If you decide that nothing important & expensive is mangled, take it to a GOOD engine rebuilder with lotsa 5sFe experience, (in bits, or whole) and get an HONEST appraisal. -There are people out there who'll tell you the truth, seriously!!
If you're lucky, you might get away with new rings, new Bearing-caps (Crank-mains, bigends, gudgeon pins, camshafts etc), cleaned and reassembled Valve-gear, Oil Journal flush, and a light hone in the bores to help seat the new rings. If it needs it, get a valve-seat job done while you're there.
All that shouldn't cost the earth (relatively speaking), and you can use the excuse to lighten + balance the crank + flywheel while it's all apart. BONUS!!
Of course, if it's major destruction down below (or up-top), the transplant options look reeeeaal good all of a sudden.
Oh yeah - I thought the N/A 3S-GE had 2-5kw more than the 5S-FE, but about 10nm less. no?
From Celica.net;
5S-FE:
Engine: _ _ _ _ 2.2L four EFI DOHC
Horsepower _ _ 1994-95 _ 135HP@5400RPM
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ 1996-98 _ 130HP@5400RPM
Torque _ _ _ _ 1994-95 _ 145@4400RPM
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ 1996-98 _ 145@4400RPM
Bore _ _ _ _ _ _ 3.43 in
Stroke _ _ _ _ _ 3.58 in
Compression ratio _ _ 9.5:1
3S-GE:
Engine _ _ _ _ _2.0L four EFI DOHC
Horsepower _ 1986-89 _ 135HP@6000RPM
Torque _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ 125lb/ft@4800RPMs
Bore _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ 86mm
Stroke _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ 86mm
Compression ratio _ _ _ _9.2:1
If the Head's rooted in your motor, strap on a 3S-GTE head, and install high-compression forged pistons. You'll have to lighten the Crank to suit, then you'll then have 2.2L Torque, with a high-flow head and 6,000+ rpm !! JOY !!!
I'd guess 150->160hp, depending on what she'd rev to.....

JAAAYZUS that's some work!! I've seen the V6 swap in MR2's, but only ever heard the idea bandied about for Celicas.
Interesting, however my personal preference would be to supercharge (centrifugal, not positive displacement) the 5sfe, or drop in a 3sgTe. If you're super-keen, you could go for a banzai 3sge N/A motor that revs to 9,000rpm+
