TA22 13inch tyre profile question

Hey again guys, just thought of another question I needed to ask.
After getting my celica on the road, I promptly took of the standard rims and put on a set of Cheviot 205/60 13's that I got with my wrecking car.
My question is, is the profile incorrect? I ask because on some test driving with a friends car we know is going the correct speed, mine was out by rougly 10k's, doing 60 on my guage was showing about 50 on his, and roughly the same at 110 on mine was 100 on his.
The standard rims have got something like 175/70 or something close to that. I thought that with 205/60' the extra width made up for some of the height in the profile. (but I don't really know a lot about how that is worked out)
Thanks
Floppy

175/70 sidewall height = 122.5mm
205/60 sidewall height = 123mm
Practically no difference. I wouldn't take much notice of your speedo, it's a 30yo car so you wouldn't expect it to be terribly accurate!

But standard isn't 175/70, it's about 155 SR13 or 165 SR13, equivilent to an 82 sidewall profile.
Like Norbie says, don't trust the speedo. Hell, mine's still in MPH.
If you're really concerned and if this is the final tyre size you want to run, you could get an instrument shop to check the calibration of your speedo against a second guage or dyno.

Ok thanks for the info,
I might grab the speedo and cable from my wrecking car and see if its the same there, and then get 1 of them tested.
Also I forgot to ask in the first post, can the cogs be changed like we can in the older falcons, ie 1 less or more tooth. Did toyota make variations?
Thanks again guys

Bumping this back to the top.
Ok I need some new tyres for my Cheviot Rims. The size on them is 205/60 R13 Brisdestones (white writing) and they are down to the depth markers.
So I was wondering if you guys knew of where to get some good priced bridgestones, yokohama's etc. I was also told that Nanyang (?spelling) and Federal may do that size.
Place I spoke to said its a very limited rim size to get good tyres for now a days.
I was hoping for around the $100 mark each tyre. I dont really want to spend too much if I can help it while getting a good tyre at the same time.

If you can't get 205/60R13 consider 195/60R13? or 195/65R13?
Yokohama used to do the A509 in that size but it is discontinued now. They may do either an A539 (good) or S306 (economy) in that size or close (like 195).
Your Bridgestone tyres with the white writing may be SF340 Eager. May still be available?
"Nankang" may do something, yes. Not held in great repute but better than no tyres at all!
Hope this helps.

SSI gets the prize, the original tyres on a TA22 are 165R13, which is an 82 series profile, overall diameter of 596mm. You want someting like a 215/60 13 (588mm) or a 225/60 13 (600mm) to get close to your original diameter so the speedo reads close to actual speed. That's of course if they make tyres in those sizes and if they don't foul on your guards/suspension either.
A 195/65 13 (584mm) might be a better bet.
The 205/60 13's are 576mm od, and while that is 20mm (and in some States illegal) below the std size, its only 3.3% different in overall diameter, meaning that your speedo should only be 3km/h out at 100km/h. Reading high as it is completing a revoluation faster than std.
I would guess that maybe you, and your mates, speedo's are both out, yours reads high (3-4km/h) while his reads low (5km/h), combining to give you that 10km/h or so difference. So first off, check to see if your speedo is stuffed.
Hope you can get some decent tyres as well. I have A539's and they are excellent.
Mitch.

Thanks guys,
I rang a few places this morning and 185 or 205 is the standard I can get (if they even stock them). Sumotomo(spelling) and Bridgestone were the main choices. That other brand I mentioned is not something I want to get being a crappier tyre. Have to ring around and see if I can find some Yokohama's as well.
Average price seems to be $140+ for the bridgestones and $125 for the Sumotomo's
Can we change cogs on the gearbox like the old falcons use to be able to. I am getting the speedo checked soonish, but wanted to explore all options.
I was also reading in the other thread too. How much of a coincidence was that, another TA22 owner asking about tyre sizes
Thanks again.

I will find out tomorrow about the Sumitomos.
Taking the car into one of my friends tyre place (Frank & Jeff's in Ipswich). I can get a bit of a discount there and they will order in what is availble. So will suss out the Bridgestones, Sumitomos and Yokohamas prices.
After talking to my friend last night with the escort, he prefers the Yokohama A treads over the Bridgestones.
Thanks.

Yeah, the Yokohama A539s are supposed to be pretty good. They'll be my next set of 195/60R14s for my TA22.

Oh if I only had 14 inch rims Bigger choice of rubber.
Problem is I like the 13 inch Cheviots. Suit the car nicely.
Might put some pics up. !
