Domain name purchasing/setup - attn Nerf Herders

Im looking at buying a couple of domain names, and i want to know what people recommend for a half-arsed bastard like myself who doesnt have teh uber website skills.
Im looking at registering from http://www.cheapdomain.com.au/
They appear to sell the domain name for aroun $16p/year with basic URL forwarding.
I want some opinions and suggestions as to what i should do.
# I have a LARGE amount of webspace available which someone gave me FTP access to with my own folder and login (www.rollamods.com/witzl) which i intend to use to host the site
# I would like my domain to appear in the browser window up top, and if someone for instance types www.witzl.com/*subfolder-X* it goes to the correct folder as loaded on the rollamods webspace.
# does the basic forwarding cheapdomain provides going to do this? How would i set this up?
# can anyone suggest another place that might be worth looking at for purchasing the domain based on what i want?
LIke i said, im not all that good at this shite - i understand that a few basic scripts are required to link the domain to the actual hosted site, so something that has easy to set up features like this would rock.
is anyone willing to offer me some help on the topic? I want to buy the couple of domains im after today or VERY SOON.

I don't think its "scripts". Its the actual configuration of the site.
You really need to talk to the cheap place your going through as many vary. And I think you have to ask for it specifically, otherwise they won't turn it on. Ask them something along the linse of
if someone goes to http://www.witzl.com.au/stuff/nudes.html will it translate to www.rollamods.com/witzl/stuff/nudes.html ?
On your side of things, again its the configuration that you need to setup, which depends on what webserver/appserver your planning to run.

If your buying your own domain. Wouldn't you want the address to be yours?
eg. www.witzl.com.au
instead of www.rollamods.com.au/witzl
Or do you just want the domain to be a first-hit page so that it redirects everyone to the rollamods/witzl site?
Are you writing your own website, or using something within the rollamods site that hosts your own page for you?

I'm not sure what wil happen if your site is piggybacking a different webserver/IP address.
In the domain configuration (setup when you buy the domain) what it does is map a domain name eg. "www.witzle.com" to a specific IP address (and port if necessary I think) eg. "208.170.149.185".
I don't THINK you can tell it a website address within that IP address. So you can't tell it to map www.witzle.com to 208.170.149.185/witzle.
You'd probably need a seperate web server listening on a different port (or a different IP/port).
Feel free to ring me btw.

Check out HostOnce: (http://www.hostonce.com/hostingdetails.htm) for details of their plans..
Mine costs me about $10 a month, and they have a price gaurantee meaning as long as you keep paying your bill your costs won't go up (even if they raise the price for new members).
Quite cheap, but one downside is that technically they own the Domain name, so if you want to keep using the name you need to keep using them..
Fairly decent inclusions and support though..

I think thats roughly what my dad would have for his vss.com.au site. He never goes near the 2gig cap but generally only gets around 500 visits per week. You'll be fine with a 2 gig cap. If you go anywhere near it then start worrying.
And 55meg space is plenty. Your right, all your big files you can put on rollamods.
You still don't know what type of website you want. If it will need a database or anything else like that. All of this you'll have to ask the hosting place.
$60 a year is pretty good from the research I did a while ago. Provided you can put a DB and some funky stuff on it (ASP/PHP/etc.).

Witzl,
What you want to do is URL masking. You can do this through a service such as www.mydomain.com. All you have to do is register your domain and delegate (set your dns records) to ns1.mydomain.com -> ns4.mydomain.com. At www.mydomain.com (login/register a new account) and map www.witzl.com to www.rollamods.com/witzl.
My Domain automatically sets up a frameset that hides the actual location of your site.

these folk <www.quadrahosting.com.au> are reasonably cheap (if you choose their US based servers) and their tech support is very thorough (e.g. plenty of warning, testing and planning of upgrades, they tell you when & why things go wrong, their servers seem quite reliable, humans reply to all emails , etc)
partner & myself have a site with them and several tech-head mates refer their clients to them for cheap, reliable hosting services. i get no benefit from this, i'm just very impressed with the service
we registered the .com.au doman name thru netregistry, but any .com.au name is much dearer than a plain .com .
cheers.
