hi guys,
im just wondering what the advantages and disadvantages of putting a lightened flywheel on my ae82 100kw corolla. thinking something around the 4kg mark?
some people say its harder to drive with a lightened flywheel, like doing hill starts etc. ive also heard that u get alot more noise from the gearbox with a new flywheel?

I have a 5kg flywheel on my 3s celica and yeah, you have to always give it alot more revs to get moving, hill or flat. you do get alot more noise from that area. If you brake quickly and put the clucth in the car will almost stall. it can be a bit worse on the hiway cause it runs down really quick.
pro's, when in motion it spins through the rev range much more quickly. its a lot more responsive.

Reducing the mass of the flywheel reduces the momentum of the circulating mass. You'll use more revs to move it, but it will rev easier, as mentioned above. You will get used to it, but forget about driving it like a standard engine.

Combine it with some big cams, and a fulsik puck clutch, and it will be a bit of a handful in traffic - it just takes more effort to drive it, but hey, who cares Don't do all these things if you use the car for courier work etc., but if it's only a drive-for-fun car, no bother.
