Gday all,
Am a newbie to this forum..thanks for any/all help/ideas.
I bought a 92 MX83 Grande in Nov99 with 72000km from Toyota dealer. Elderly gent ill, didn't drive it for 18 months...good I thought. Started burning oil 1 ltr 3000km. Took it to Toyota, they repaired it, stuck ring in piston. Re ringed, bearings, head reconditioned ($3000) at 116000km. Service book mostly up to date before my purchase. 122000km now sounds like a diesel when cold, mostly fine when warm but occasionly has a tappet like sound when hot. Toyota say that they reckon it is a cracked piston but will not know until pulled apart, same money again and that warrantly only valid if it a part they fixed, funnily the pistons hold the rings. It seems strange to me that the piston would all of a sudden get cracked. This sucks. Any ideas

Further to my initial... Does Toyotas diagnosis sound like it could be correct. The engine is much noisier at 1800 revs and actually has a slight pulsating vibration eminating to the cab. I know I can get a replacement imported engine for $2000 fitted, but would rather keep it the way it is (engine running properly that is)
thanks Mal

Yeh that sux man...
Umm.. To me.. a freind had a 7m in a supra.. Sounds EXACTLY the same as what your getting.. Sounds to me like the big end bearing is gone. Big and costly job to fix. I would seriously recommend buying an import motor and fitting it.
Friend just got his motor for $750, All we did was change the loom over to the new motor.. Ready to drop back in.. Problem solved hopefully..
But yeh.. hehhe funny you said sounds deisel.. cause i used to call his the Diesel Supra! Smile

Yep, M series engines are good at doing this sort of thing. I had it happen to me twice. Sad

Mine's rough at startup, I baby it until it's warm, and it goes a lot quieter, however free revving the engine sounds fricking noisy...The unfortunate thing is that the mechanic told me it was probably the big end too...although my engine has done 340,000km/s...only a head recondition and head gasket of course...

Thanks for the information. If it is the big end bearing, how long will it go for before finally collapsing. Interestingly the bearings were replaced at rebuild (supposedly). If 7M engines are famous for this type of thing, is there a better alternative engine. thanks Mal

If its a tinny sound and it misfires it could be a sticking valve or a leaking hydraulic adjuster on one of the valves in the cyl head. the oil galleries feeding the cams tend to block up with crud. How long since the last oil change?

Does your oil light go out straight away?

Mine does it occasionally ,usually around service time or if i forget to check the oil levels.

Take it somewhere else and get a second opinion. Even if its another Toyota dealer.

big end bearings usually make the most noise when driving under load , and its a deep knock rather than a tinny noise.

Biased99 and Inertia, are you guys swap happy or what! Very Happy

Not really, the man asked a valid questions, and I gave what I thought was a valid answer Laughing

Mmmm 1UZ-FE Cool

Opps, I mean, only if it is necessary!

I have stinged on a 4AG conversion in my AE92 for ages and it has cost me or my dad over 3.5g's in fixin the farkin thing up, now I am in a better financial position, if it screws up again, something nice an reliable is going it.

In all honesty, I'm only promoting the 1UZ because I'm doing the same thing into the same car...and of course it's a lot more reliable than the 7M!

As for being swap-happy, this is definitely the last time! Smile
(But it will be worth it when finished!!)
