5MGE is teh ghey Thu, 05 August 2004 07:45 Go to next message
just installed a 5me harness to replace the microtech that "was running it".
Started the engine and it blows plumes and plumes of white/brownish smoke.
I have just put the intake and throttle body ect back on after cleaning them out and a little bit of paint.
Plugs are coated in fuel (just replaced them).
When i remove the EFI fuse it starts ok and seems to run reasonably.
Any ideas?

nope, ran fine on the old engine.

on a side note where would i get gaskets (intake chamber, throttle and cold start injector) for hte 5mge, do toyota still carry gaskets for such old engines?

You suggest it is running rich, yet it ran perfectly before.

I would suggest you have wired something up strangely (or missed something altogether).

I would suggest looking at how you have wired up the water temp sensor, the cold start injector and the CSI switch. Make sure the CSI is hooked up to the starter power and not the ignition power. Once it is running, unplug the CSI and see what happens. If the water temp sensor is not connected the engine will run rich.

I am also assuming you haven't done something moronic like put 440cc/min injectors in there.

If you're running stock management and bigger injectors then you are in trouble. That would be why it's overfuelling.

The computer commands a certain amount of fuel to be injected, but the bigger injectors pump in more. Therefore you're running rich.

Go back to stock everything.

Hen

PS, what your bro should have said is that those injectors COULD SUPPORT more power. Big injectors alone won't make any power difference.

I was just teasing mate.
Its running stock injectors.
It never ran properly (i dont know when i said it did), water temp and csi are wired up properly, its using the factory loom i havent exactly "wired" anything up.
Still runs rich without csi connected.

perhaps the regulator has shat itself?

Put a pressure gauge on the fuel rail, that will tell you if the regulator is working properly or if you have other fuel pressure problems.

Also make sure the ECU is earthed really really well; this can cause all manner of strange problems! When my 18R-GEU ECU wasn't earthed properly the injectors would stop pulsing and stay 100% open, which obviously made the engine run incredibly rich and stall.

How the hell did you come to that conclusion and fix it?

I'm pretty sure you said it ran just fine (before you rewired the old Microtech) in the seller's car.

Norbie's suggestion of earthing everything is good. Checking the fuel pressure is reasonable too. Maybe check the water temp sensor?
My money is still on something not wired up correctly.

Sorry, didn't notice the note of sarcasm.

That exhausts all my suggestions... apart from doing a 1jz conversion.

Good luck

I knew the injectors were opening because the car reeked of fuel as soon as you switched the ignition on, so I knew there was a wiring problem somewhere. Much probing with multimeters eventually led me to the conclusion that there was too much resistance between the ECU body and the chassis; I clamped a jumper lead to the ECU, and the other end to the engine block, and hey presto it started! Rolling Eyes well actually... it did run before we pulled it out fo the car. Laughing
but i just dont know where an electrical problem could exist...
ill go over the loom and check for shorts etc.

ive tried to make a better earth for hte computer so ill see how that pans out soon.

i was thinkin more along fuel delivery because it did all of a sudden start running uber rich with the old microtech, so i thought something may have shat itself.

thanks for the input fellas Very Happy

If you like customisation, and a car with a lead tip and no handling.

Basically, it will phyiscally fit (I tihnk), but will ruin all handling.

And besides, the 5me is a motor NOT worthy of converting too.
Get a 3sge, or 3sgte.
