5MGE is teh ghey
|

just installed a 5me harness to replace the microtech that "was running it".
Started the engine and it blows plumes and plumes of white/brownish smoke.
I have just put the intake and throttle body ect back on after cleaning them out and a little bit of paint.
Plugs are coated in fuel (just replaced them).
When i remove the EFI fuse it starts ok and seems to run reasonably.
Any ideas?

nope, ran fine on the old engine.
on a side note where would i get gaskets (intake chamber, throttle and cold start injector) for hte 5mge, do toyota still carry gaskets for such old engines?

I was just teasing mate.
Its running stock injectors.
It never ran properly (i dont know when i said it did), water temp and csi are wired up properly, its using the factory loom i havent exactly "wired" anything up.
Still runs rich without csi connected.
perhaps the regulator has shat itself?

Put a pressure gauge on the fuel rail, that will tell you if the regulator is working properly or if you have other fuel pressure problems.
Also make sure the ECU is earthed really really well; this can cause all manner of strange problems! When my 18R-GEU ECU wasn't earthed properly the injectors would stop pulsing and stay 100% open, which obviously made the engine run incredibly rich and stall.

How the hell did you come to that conclusion and fix it?

I'm pretty sure you said it ran just fine (before you rewired the old Microtech) in the seller's car.
Norbie's suggestion of earthing everything is good. Checking the fuel pressure is reasonable too. Maybe check the water temp sensor?
My money is still on something not wired up correctly.

Sorry, didn't notice the note of sarcasm.
That exhausts all my suggestions... apart from doing a 1jz conversion.
Good luck

I knew the injectors were opening because the car reeked of fuel as soon as you switched the ignition on, so I knew there was a wiring problem somewhere. Much probing with multimeters eventually led me to the conclusion that there was too much resistance between the ECU body and the chassis; I clamped a jumper lead to the ECU, and the other end to the engine block, and hey presto it started!

Hey, this is the third time you've asked the same question... ask it once and wait for a reply, don't pollute our forums with repeated questions!

not too sure,
replaced some gaskets, and swapped the microtech back in, then the 5me loom back in and took it for a thrash and it cleared up. no trace of smoke now...
i dun get it
but its all good now so yeh!
