Stripped thread on tie rod end or nut Thu, 05 August 2004 10:03 Go to next message
This has been a giant PITA for the past few weekends, damn you norbie and your SIMPLE power steering rack swaps!

Anyway, tie rod is in, nut is threaded on halfway, problem is, it has tension on the nut when you turn, but the nut wont wind down nor will it losen off.

So it appears the nut is free spinning on the tie rod end, which makes removal of it difficult. Im not really too keen on getting under the car with the angle grinder.

Has anyone got any ideas on how to fix this problem? ie, removing the nut, or somehow making it tighten up.

gday,
if this is a bolt coming out of a ball joint on the tie rod end well i found you can put a jack under it and jack it up a bit to put some waight on the ball joint. this usually holds it enough to undo the bolt.
give it a go, might work

hehe sorry, i did that, the ball joint thread wasn't spinning, made sure of that, but the nut just spins with a fair bit of resistance.

EDIT:

going to try a nut splitter and re tap the thread
