SA 63 motor options ??

I have an SA 63 Celica (jan 84) which needs a new motor. Originally I was hoping to find a replacement for the original that had been pulled out for an engine swap but no luck so far.
As I haven't had a Celica since the late seventies (a 71 TA22 with flat rear lamps) I'm having trouble deciphering the alphabet soup of engine combos. I have got the list from this site but it still makes little sense to me.
In an ideal world I want a 2.oL (ish) naturally aspirated twin OHC engine what should I be looking for? I've spent the last 20 years doing up a succession of Falcon coupes and Monaros and wouldn't know one end of a turbo from another ...
Any clues to lift the veil of secrecy would be appreciated and any leads to a suitable motor (I'm in Sydney BTW) would be above and beyond the call.
Thanks
Pete

I know you don't want a turbo, but really. The 1G-GTE is your best bet.
2.0L EFI DOHC twin turbo.
Plenty of info on this site about the swap, so just do a search and you'll find it.

What about a 3s-ge, you would need to converty for RWD setup, but it's the only DOHC 2L that produces reasonable power. You could get a 3S-FE, which is the same block, but a more economical head design.

you should be made aware you will have some highly desireable (to some people) parts left over if you do an engine swap.
youre sump, oil pick up, engine mounts, belhousing, and a few other nick nacks are required to convert a 3sgte to rwd.
you could sell these to offset the cost.
maybe put and EOI add in the parts for sale section.

Hi Pete
You do have a couple of options, but unfortunately Toyota seems to specialise in transverse-mount four cylinders and inline sixes.
Your best options are a 3SGE or 3SGTE or (as Nark suggested) a 1GGTE. Unfortunately neither of these are straightforward like the swaps you are no doubt accustomed to.
While the 3SGE (two lite four) and 3sgte (two litre turbo four) were both available in RWD they were essentially a FWD layout whacked in the rear of the car to create a RWD midmount setup.
As such they are both relatively difficult to convert to RWD, but having a motor from the same family (yours is a 2SC) will help as a number of the parts (eg gearbox) will bolt straight up. There are still a number of issues involving modifications to coolant outlets and exhaust manifolds - with a search there should be some great resources on this site about "3SGTE to RWD".
The 1GGTE (inline six cylinder twin turbo) is a more straightforward swap in that all you really need to do is fabricate some custom engine mounts after positioning the engine between the radiator & firewall! The main headache with this one will be clearance on the exhaust side (due to the twin turbo setup) and a tight squeeze lengthwise.
Each of these engines involves a custom wiring job and the obligatory EFI conversion - for the turbo engines you will also need an intercooler piped in at the front too so factor in an extra $1000 for this at least.
There are other engines you may use but they are even harder than the above, and I wouldnt' recommend these as a first-time swap.

What about Gen 4 3S-GE? That's RWD setup already...

I excluded them from the list because in my experience these are prohibitively expensive (if I recall I saw an importer asking $6k for an auto half cut).
Having had a bit of experiene, and a hand in a number of other conversions... budget a minimum of around $6k (this includes the half cut) but realistically more like $10k. After that there are also other things you'll find that will need attention like brakes, LSD, etc so it does become a neverending process.

I vote 3s-ge. You have nearly all the parts on ur motor ready to convert. Make sure u get a gen1 3sge for 6 bolt flywheel compatibility.

Yup. There's a good reason RWD 3S conversions are quite rare, despite looking like a great idea on paper.
