2jzge rod length and piston comp height Wed, 22 May 2002 12:59 Go to next message
Edit: after accurate measurement: Rod length 141 mm, comp height 34 mm.

Yep I finally tore down the bottom end tonight, so Pete here it is! Crank will come up fine with a linish, bores look like hell. :- I'll see what they look like after a light hone..
Cheers Dave.

Same compression height as 1J, dave. Nice.

The 1j should be easy to get pistons for.

Dave/Pete
Do either of you know if IJZGTE and 2JZGTE Camshafts and cam sprockets are interchangeable?
Also anyone know Inlet and Exhaust cam lift and duration specs for JDM 1J and 2Js?
Thanks
Manny

Manny, I can't tell you much about 1J stuff, but I did post the 2JZGE and GTE cam specs in the old forums. In a post above I linked that thread to this thread so it should be there for you. Unfortunately, I can't tell you what diameter the 2JZ cam journals are as my cams are off being....er....improved, but I suspect they are the same as a 1J. Maybe Pete has had his 1JZ cams profiled.
Definitely 141 mm Glenn.
Cheers Dave.

Thank you gents. At least now I know can fit JUN or HKS adjustable cam sprockets to my 1J.

Dave
I've copied (and converted to mm) your Cam specs from the old forum post for the 2JZGTE

intake lift .325" (8.255mm) duration is 223 degrees
exhaust lift .331" (8.4074mm) duration is 223 degrees

Can you confirm wether it is a Jap or export spec 2JZGTE you've supplied specs for as it seems to conflict with what I have been reading on http://www.mkiv.co.nz/techo.htm#INLET_EXHAUST_CAMS

Pete
Can you elaborate on the 1J Cam specs as suggested by Dave?

What I'm trying to get at is wether any of the 2J Cams are a worthwhile upgrade for my 1JZGTE rather than forking out for JUN, TRD or HKS items at a later stage.

Thanks again for the input and apologies for hijacking your thread.

Sorry Manny, export (US market cams). I'm not sure how you worked out the durations but I get 233 (3 + 180 +50) for the inlet and 236 (52 + 180 + 4) for the exhaust. When I looked at that article and cross referenced, I see they quote the US inlet cam having the very specs I mentioned!
My GE cams had the same lifts as those quoted when I checked with my dial indicator.

Dave
Apologies, I misinterpreted your comment "Valve lift between the two are identical, and duration is 233 degrees" as meaning both were 233 degrees - did not actually do the math as you did.

Anyone got specs or can confirm them for JDM 2J/1J CAMS?

Sorry manny, i do not have the specs for the 1j's cams. They do share the same lift!!

I'd say bulid your engine, then change your cams if you find your combo lacking at a certain rev/load range.

The cams are easy to change with the motor in the car.

BTW: when you get a price on some aftermarket cam sprockets, post it up.

I got some custom adjustable cam sprokets made for about $250. Any machine shop should be able to do this for you. Sure beats the $500 USD quoted by HKS and JUN! Unorthidox racing and some other Yank mob also make them but they are around $300 USD + delivery.

I got both done Pete. If you do get some aftermarket jobbies, then according to the dudes on Supraforums, the five bolt ones are the go.

Pete
Did some ringing around today on the adjustable 1J/2J cam gears.

BD4s
HKS Alloy $ 282.00 each

Croydon Autosport
HKS Alloy $ 280.00 each
JUN Steel $ 320.00 each

Speedworks WA
JUN Steel $550.00 each

On the web:-
AEM Alloy $150 USD pair
http://www.aempower.com/cam_gears.htm

Advice from a mechanic mate and also Jim at Croydon Autosports is to go for Steel cam gears rather than Alloys. Both reported problems with HKS alloy cam gears wearing both the gear and belts over time leading to unecessary replacement of both.

Consensus seem to be that only exhaust side really needs replacing as intake adjustment will yield negligible power/torque increases.

The steel JUN units from CAS seems very good value for money compared to Speedworks!

Cam gears Wed, 29 May 2002 16:59 Go to previous messageGo to next message
That's an excellent price on the JUN cam gears, Manny.

Very true regarding power gains.....with the 2JZGE and stock cams, 14 hp maximum gain from the exhaust gear alone and a further 4 from the intake. Apparently this is increased when bigger cams are used. Claims of 50 plus horsepower when both camgears are replaced and correctly adjusted on the 2JZGTE and HKS 272 cams.

Re: Cam gears Thu, 30 May 2002 11:14 Go to previous message
Sounds promising Dave - wonder what it would translate to on the 1J?

A group buy would make the JUN price even sweeter too according to Jim at CAS.
Anyone interested?
