icon4.gif  urethane engine mounts Fri, 06 August 2004 14:56 Go to next message
i just got my rolla running again after 2 months downtime with a spun bearing, so i decided to get the original cracked saggy engine mounts filled with urathane to stiffen them up. Shocked Shocked Shocked . now i have the car running again the negine does not move and transfers all the vibrations and noises straight to the chassis. i havent actually driven it out on the road again yet but im expecting it to be mega harsh and noisy (moreso than before) but i am also expecting it to hook up a little better of the line and transfer a little more power to the wheels due to it not rocking and thrashing about violently under high torque loads.axle tramp should be reduced aswell.
if anyone is considering this for their east west engined car with the round style iso mounts i have 80A grade upper mounts and 70A grade lowers (slightly softer) and its VERY CHEAP to do if you have spare mounts it will cost around $20-40 done by a shop in a range of colours.
ill keep you posted with my thoughts on the upgrade

Please do keep us posted - I'm quite interested as at least two of my mounts are pretty bad Confused

On the topic, are there companies out there that actually make new engine mounts, as opposed to filling the old one's with urethane?

ok i got the rolla out on the road today and there is a slight difference in vibration but the only bummer is at low enging revs the rear view mirror shaking is soo bad its like i had a ful sic stereo pumpin Rolling Eyes . its nearly impossible to see out.

the company i used is Newcastle Urethane Services, in cardiff NSW they quoted me $40 each mount to strip and fully rebuild opposed to $40 for 4 just preping and filling.

i havent found any company selling the mounts pre made since theres such a huge variety off different mounts out there it wouldnt really make commercial sense.

this stuff applies to all the guys with IRS with rubbers that are getting old and shitty MA61 is a prime candidate for urethane filled mounts

Can these companies also do non round mounts (sandwich type) like in north/south motors? If so could you remake these plates to suit a conversion if the original chassis and engine bolt on mounts didn't quite line up or were at different angles?

they can do anything with urethane. with that sort of thing they need the plates to be jigged up in correct relation to each otherthen they just fill the center. i do know of a few sandwich type mounts available but cant remember any manufacturers. ive heard of mostly V8 comonwhores and rotaries with these mounts.

1 downfall is with extreme torque being made the sandwich type do still tear like rubber ones

Noltec, one of our club sponsors, also recos engine mounts with urethane, plus they also give toymods members a 25% discount.
I had my RWD 4AGE in an RA23 mystery mounts (prolly TA23 mounts) and my gearbox mount done by them a couple of months ago.
Yet to experience the difference in vibration......
