The Toyota EPC lists two part numbers for each size.
They only list a quantity of 4 for the two part numbers so there must be two different pistons in the engine.
13101-50020-02 for Mark2,x2A Qty 4
13301-50010-02 for Mark 2, UIA Qty 4
What do the "x2A" and "UIA" stand for?????

there are 2 different types of pistons - there are also two different ring sets as well. (differet thickness ring)
no idea why - both appear to be for the same generation motor
typical toyota

Actually found the answer - the x2A is RH side and the UIA is LH side. There is a difference between the two banks on the motor. That is why they only list quantity x 4 for each part number.
When I searched for the use of the part number it lists the Aristo as well and shows the RH & LH sides in the description.
Yes, there is another piston set after '95 so there was some change in the motor then. Also all Crown V8's use the later piston.
Problem solved so ordered new piston today.

Probably something to do with the valve reliefs cut into the crown, which may be non-symmetrical and therefore can't be swapped from one side to the other.

Norbie was on the right track. The doesn't appear to be any difference in the valve clearance holes but there is a cast-in dot marking the front of the engine.
One set has 1 dot on the front side and the other side as 2 dots on the front side. Only the Japs would worry about something like that.

They may also be offset.
Like early small block chev pistons.
