Diagnosing a dead alternator (MA61 / 5mge) Sat, 07 August 2004 00:14 Go to next message
Hey I'm hoping someone can confirm what I'm suspecting is wrong with my MkII:

It had a new battery put in when I bought the car 2 months ago, and drove fine for one month. Two weeks ago it started becoming hard to start, so I'd disconnect the battery earth terminal every time I parked it, thinking something was draining current while it was off.
This seemed to fix the problem, and I removed the stereo (for other reasons) and then went back to leaving the battery connected while parked. No problems, I figured the stereo was badly wired or somethin...

Then yesterday I had to drive a long way in peak hour traffic - noticed it was idling roughly and the instrument cluster was slightly dimming like it was struggling to get enough electrical power. I stopped soon after to buy a few beers, and when I went to restart it...No power.
Left it parked with battery disconnected for 5 hours, went back and it *just* turned over - drove it for 25 minutes (thinking alternator would be recharging the battery) and then im taking a corner with the revs at about 1200rpm and it just dies completely, no power. Not a chance of restarting, had to park and walk.

NOW..
This would point to a malfunctioning alternator, yes?
What alternators can I use on a 5MGE? Are 7M series alternators a direct swap? Any others?
Any ideas of cost of new ones (if Toyota even carry them!) or are there any places that are likely to do recoonditioned ones?

Thoughts and recommendations highly appreciated!

Damien.

i dont know what alternator is on the 5m , but the ones on the 1g and 7m are fairly expensive , small nipondenso ones. Ring around a few auto electricians.

Definitely a problem with the alternator or associated wiring. It's unlikely you need a new alternator, just take it to any auto electrician and they'll rebuild it for you (or more likely give you an exchange unit).

You can get a new "OEM" alt for less than a rebuild. the auto elec on powers rd seven hills got mine in direct replacement unit from the co that makes them just without the toyota badge (no longer available anyway) and they would have wanted $650- anyway. by memory it was about $150-

pull it off and take the back off it, and check the brushes - for $25 we fixed our townace vans alternator(all toyotas are similar). Search for the thread if you are keen.

Thanks for the responses fellas...bang on the money advice, as always.

As it happens, its pretty much running fine again, hopefully long enough to get the alt rebuilt and one less thing to worry about..!

Check this out. The bearings were fine etc (Car has done 295k). All that were needed were new brushes. Symptoms involved charge lights on dash etc. Battery went dead quickly if parkers left on etc .

Find a good local auto electricaian which can supply the individual parts, you may find the brushes are all you have to worry about, the auto elec had them already in the brush holder as a swap over deal, if more is worongwith it then clubagreenies sources of about $150 for new may be worth calling upon, or ring around

If it is a voltage regulator, then you can probably rip one of one in a pcik a part
