or better yet pull your own one apart and rebuilt it for way less than that amount

Where you getting your gearboxes rebuilt, although i believe $500 is a little too much certainly cheaper then a rebuild, last time i checked just the rebuild kit was $450.
Ive seen them as cheap as $150 and as high as $600, supply and demand i guess.

Yeah I must say thats a bit pricey for a gearbox which hasn't been reconditioned. I reconditioned my gearbox not long ago maybe 3 weeks and my gearbox has even done less than the kilometres than yours
FKN16V: I payed 1000 dollars for a full rebuild like synchros, bearings, the forks and etc and a shortshifter as well. That was a Cat General Automotive Transmission in Alexandria in Sydney
