Windscreen Removal Problem Sat, 07 August 2004 12:07 Go to next message
i need to remove the windscreen in the aw11. there is a spot of rust just above it and we need to cut it out. now we copped a big stone chip right in the middle of the drivers field of view so it needs to be replaced anyway so we figured whilst the rust is being repaired we'll whip out the screen and fix the rust and get a new one put in.

but today looking at it removing it seems a little daunting.

any ideas on how to get the bugger out.

I got a guy to come and remove a windscreen from one car, then take out the old one and put in the one from the other car. Was only $80. They usedwhat they called a cheesecutter.. pretty much just a thin bit of wire that they sort of sawed through the existing silicone/bond holding the windscreen in. He said you have to be careful as you can break them easy. I think they were caled Active windscreens the guys that came out - they have a few mitsubishi express vans, they were pretty good.

mate what i do to my cars is get a flat head screw driver and punch a hole through one part of the silicone so that i can get something through it.

once the hole is there i call a mate to come round.

once he is there i get a metal coat hanger, straighten it out and put it through the hole.

with mate in car and me out we grap a side each of the hanger and run it through and around.

works exactly like the cheesecutter the pros use.

PS i twist both sides of hanger round pliers for grip so that it doesnt slip off.

Most windscreen people have a set price for removing the old one and putting in a new windscreen.I had to repair rust in my 88 Celia and they didn't charge me any extra to come back and put the screen in after I had done the rust. Just phone up places and tell them your situation and a good company won't charge you to come back.

Cheers

Jeff
