Finally got the 1JZ !

Well, after much talk and indecision about what engine to get, I finally did go with the 1JZGTE. I picked it up on Saturday and its now sitting in my garage.
The wiring is still all attached, but no factory ECU, so I am planning on going for something like a Wolf 3D. I still have to find a Gearbox, flywheel and clutch for it though.
Anything that I should check for/replace now?
Ray
PS...its going in a Datsun 260Z

Timing belt is easier replaced out of the car, especially if it has done close to 100,000kms. Obviously check the plugs, oil, fiter, and give the cooling system a good flush before installing.

i'm so jealous..
2 weeks after i replaced my 5me with a 5me out of a cresseda i had enough money for a full installation of either a 1jz, 2jz or 7mgte engine.

Just out of interest, are timing belts expensive for the 1JZ?
Coz I swear I remember this mechanic wanting $500 to replace my timing belt.
I didnt do it coz I was gonna change the engine anyways...
But would most the cost come from taking the engine out and putting it in or the cost of the part??

I just bought a 2JZ timing belt brand new from Toyota, it was about $60-70 from memory. Methinks most of your bill was labour costs, or more likely, "screw you over cos I can" costs.

Research your choice of aftermarket computer well. The wrong choice will leave you with a blown wallet and a car you will not be happy driving. I've not personally had anything to do with Wolf but the people I know who have used this computer never seem to be happy with it. Simply put, don't ruin a good project with a cheap computer. Spend the money on good harware; the little extra now will save thousands later.
I assume you are using a manual g/box? If not, you will have a problem as the electronic auto is controlled by the factory ecu. If you are interested, i have a complete 1JZGTE loom, computer and igniter for sale. The wiring has already been sorted too.

Getting my timing belt changed cost about $250 (? or less? - certainly not $500) from memory. I think the belt was about $60 and there was 2-3 hours labour. I had to budget for coolant also as my mechanic had to remove the radiator to get room.

Here here regarding the f#%kin oil filter. Mine was an absolute %@$#^^@^*&(@!^#*(&^ to get off. In the end I had a crow bar right throught the middle of it and proceeded to hit the bar sideways to spin the filter with a sledge hammer, it tore open before it came undone and I resorted to getting a piece of steel pipe which I had one guy hold in line with one edge of the filter (or what was left of it) and after the 3rd deperate smashing it moved.
I hope the timing belt isnt as difficult.

OH yeah peoples...also ordering twin pipes this week from Brendan......well as soon as he quotes me back on the twin cats.
I'm going to go with 2.5" twin pipes right back to twin cats, then join to single 3.5" just before the rear axles, then one dump.
Have been told that with two hot dogs it's fairly quiet too.
Total cost, Approx. $1400...not bad.

Grant, I could be very interested in the factory ECU if it works with a manual box, and if it was at the right price.
I would rather spend money on doing up other parts of my car then going and getting an exxy aftermarket ECU fitted and tuned, but then again I dont want to spend too much on an OEM ECU as I would just be upgrading eventually anyway...

HHAHAH
Thank christ im not the only one who thought removing the oil filter on the 1JZ was an absolute PRICK of a job..
Best time to remove and replace was 32mins with 2 people, one under the car and one reaching in from the top.
I still havent managed to do it without spilling the oil out of the filter...
maybe a should spot weld a handle onto the filter before i put it in to make it easy to remove.
