There are several possibilities here:
1. Battery on its last legs.
2. Dodgy electrical connections(s).
3. Dud starter solenoid.
No 3 is easy to diagnose; next time the engine won't start, give the starter solenoid a solid whack with something heavy. If it starts, there's your problem.

i used to have a little scrub car and sometimes the wire that comes from the ignition switch to the solinoid would just vibrate off. it only had a blade type plug. try puttin a wire on '+' on the battery and connecting it directly to the little blade plug or similar. make sure the car is in neutral or pak thou

That won't work for any auto built in the last 50 years. Really old autos used to have a pump on the output shaft, which means roll-starts were possible. Modern autos only have a pump on the input shaft, which means it's impossible to engage any gears if the engine isn't running and thus roll-starts are not possible.
