when you get a yellow sticker (in w.a.) and you go over the pits, are they only soppose to check the things that are on the sticker or the whole car, because my friend has two things on his yellow sticker and they wouldn't take it off because there were other 'minor' things wrong on the car?

I think legally they have to find three things to put a defect notice on a vehicle. But once it goes over the pits, they can pick anything if it not up to scratch.

well he had two things booked for which are his fault, no airfilter ! and the exhaust bracket was snapped which it made the exhaust wobble sometimes, so when he fixed them and went over the pits they said there were others wrong but don't know what they were

So, if you have one badly bald tyre and your engine is pissing oil out everywhere then you're OK. I think NOT. The Police can put a yellow sticker on your car for a single trivial thing.
I can vouch for this.
And yes, the vehicle needs to be up to complete scratch when going over the pits to remove the canary. I can for vouch for this as well.

When I got my WRX, three days after I got pulled over and they tested my tint with a device that goes over the window. The tint I had only allowed 7% light into the car when I think the minimum is 35%. They let me off just saying "get it done within the week".

Well obviously if the car is unsafe in the way you described then yes the can put a sticker on it for only one problem. But if they are minor things, that dont effect the safety of the vehicle, eg torn drivers seat, tyres that are just illegal, brake pedal a tad low, crack in a tail lens etc, then they need to find at least three of these minor faults do defect the car. It also depends on your attitude towards the police officer if they are only minor things.

They told me that all four doors had to be re-tinted and the rear could be left the way it was. The reason is if at night you are trying to get out of a tight corner, then you have to be able to see through all four windows clearly. And the rear is not that important as you have mirrors to guide you ........

In WA, a yellow sticker issue used to require three faults for issue, but not any more - this is the fact behind those stories of three faults. Once issued, the car needs a full inspection at a licensing centre where they can retain the sticker on the car for any other fault requiring attention not on the original sticker. Prices and methods of inspection have also recently gone up, making it basically twice as expensive if you have to go over twice, as it used to be. Moral of the story is get the car attended to before you head to the pits, to avoid the extra costs now in place!
