18R-G valve gear clearances... Tue, 10 August 2004 14:55 Go to next message
I don't have (yet) work shop manual for 18R-G, so could someone check the valve lifter (bucket) min. and max. diameter. It's the same for intake and exhaust, right?

According to my workshop manual 18RG bucket clearance should be 2mm approx, both inlet and exhaust. Intake valve clearance 0.24-0.34mm. Exhaust valve clearance should be 0.29-0.39mm.
Calculate thickness of new pad so valve clearance comes within specs
T1 **Thickness of pad used
A **Valve clearance measured

Intake side
New pad thickness
=T1 + (A - 0.29mm) 0.29mm being desired clearance

Exhaust Side
=T1 + (A - 0.34mm) 0.34mm being desired clearance

Did you mean 0.2mm or are we talking about same clearance?
Holes for the buckets were from 38.05mm to 38.16mm from memory. Shouldn't the bucket diameters be something like 37.90mm.
I managed to obtain a RG head but it's blank. I'm going to get OS SS-valves for it. Saabs have 38.00mm buckets so I'm going to machine these to fit.

Can someone check their 2TG books for this guy. The buckets are the same on 18RG and 2TG. Just dont have access to my books at the moment.

regards Chuck.

it should be a nice free/sliding/running fit.
not as close as the wrist/gudgeon pin in the piston, and not as loose a clearance as the piston in the bore.
i'd worry more about the heads bore diameter then the bucket/follower/lifter diameter.
i'd go by the clearance specs for ANY OTHER head with a similar design.

i have no experience with this engine.

From the 18RG manual there are four different bucket sizes (refered to as valve lifters).

Black: 37.925-37.931mm
Blue: 37.931-37.937mm
Yellow: 37.937-37.943mm
Red: 37.943-37.949mm

Oil Clearance STD 0.02-0.03mm
Limit 0.1mm
