brett, do you have pics of how you modified the steer column to adapt to the cresidda steer box?
i thought the box needed a new hole thru the chassis rail and the extra length of the shaft going into the box meant the stock shaft was too long.
you used the pitman arm from the ra40?
btw: am reasonably sure ra40/ra23 have same steering box - others will have to advise on the earlier TA's and the 28

hi all,
this is a old topic i wrote a while ago, it seemed nobody was interested in ra40 conversions. should explain most. ive completed this conversion and it works great, the only problem i had was the pump leaked - jus needs a new seal.
hi guys
i have found that many cressida parts will fit onto my ra40. firstly power steering, the bolt holes all line up perfectly, so no new holes will need to be drilled or modified. the only problem i encountered is that the 2 pin rubber disc plate that connects to the steerin column shaft sits about 15 - 20 mm to far up. this can be corected by sliding the 2 pin rubber disc plate down on the steering box spline as far as it will go, then tightening the bolt which holds it there. this only leaves it out by about 7mm. to get this extra 7mm the steering shaft will need to be machined at the the top end so the ignition switch and bearing can be slid back into its origional position. brackets for the pump will need to be fabricated.
power locking will literally bolt in, but conecting rods will need to be made to join the locking mechanism with the electromagnet.
power windows are a bit of a challange as the winder frames are different between cressidas and celicas. i cut both winder frames at the same position and the welded the bottom part (cressida - where electric motor bolts on) to the top part (celica winder frame)- this combination seems to work fine. 2 existing holes can be used but 2 new hole will need to be drilled. spacers need to be used on all holes because the electric motor sits out furthur than what the celica winder frame does.
many other parts are interchangable like, throttle cable, elec. ignition igniter assist, radiator, center console and much more
i hoped this article can help someone.

so... if i:
- got the splines machined futher up the shaft
- cut the excess length off the shaft at the bottom
- repositioned the the plate
i could leave the top section alone?
i'd prefer to modify one end only.
btw: that diagram is great and has inspired me - i'll grab a MX6x P/S box next time i'm at wreckers and check this out further

Can I just give the RA23/8 people a warning. I tried putting a RA40 box in my 28 and the bolt holes didn't line up.
2 were fine, but 1 was out by quite a bit.
Cheers

the steering colum is two piece it slides in side each other, its held together with locating pins, apparantly you can knock them out to allow for the 7mm then reposition it so machining is necessary

Are you saying that if we machine it, we can fit the corona box into an ra28?

im talking about the colomn not the box, if the box doesnt line up u may have to redrill the mounts for the box, and also mess aroud with the correct steering arm below the box,
if you guys wait a couple weeks ill have done mine and ill write a well documented tech article for it

Sen-frigging-sational. Well, make sure you let me know when you've done it, coz i'm not liking the wandering feeling of the balljoint steering much.

Well, I am deleting the power steering box from my MX13 Corona Mark II (precursor to MX32 Cressida) and converting to rack & pinion.
I have an RT104 Corona, and I've heard that these are very very similar to the RA40, but yet to be seen. I will certainly give it a bash, and will post here how I go!
