Another 18 r-c thread- help.....

Hey all, I'm after some advice.
I've just changed the entire timing setup on my 18rc- tensioners, chains, guides ect and I'm still getting a disconcerting noise from the timing case at around 1000-1500rpm.
The old girl idles smooth around 450-500rpm, and there is no trace of this noise below 900prm.
I've done a search here already, and the only advice I've managed to discern is "dump it for a 1g".
well, that may be the case, but as I need this car to gain a RWC soon, its out of the question.
I know that almost every 18rc owner has had a similar problem, so how should I fix it? Is there something I've overlooked?
thanks for your help.

that timing case rattle can be the lower tensioner not getting (enough?) oil pressure, so when the engine is alow idle or low rpm, it doesn't keep the chain under correct tension.
are you sure the water pump and/or thermo clutch on fan are OK?
when you replaced the chains and guides, did you also replace he sprockets?
btw: idle should be 600rpm or higher - otherwise oil pressure at idle might be too low (unless you have a new pump)
easy fix? tried using thick engine oil?

The other thing that it might be is that the top tensioner may not be getting enough pressure. Pull the valve thing out its on the side of the head and get it ultra-sonically cleaned might fix the problem.

hey, thanks for all the replies,
i'm guessing that it's oil pressure related, as ive just hooked up a pressure sensor, and its reading lower than acceptable.
so ill change out the oil pump and go from there.
thanks for the help guys,
M.

well, i now know it IS oil pressure.
does anyone here know how to correctly set the cam timing in said engine? ive checked, but there are no real identifing marks on the cam sprocket or rockers.
[some engines have a mark on both..]
help me out some, guys.
is it normal to lose all power above 4000 rpm with this boat anchor?
thanks.

this is sometimes a symptom of the secondary jet in the carbi being blocked or some kinds of airleak in the carbi/manifold... check for leaks and if secondary provides any fuel
my old shitbox 18R /RA23 did this...
easy solution? chuck carbi in bin or replace
as for cam timing... from my haynes manual:
- put piston 1 at TDC
- dimple on camshaft sprocket should be at 12 o'clock
this should give you an engine at TDC for the compression stroke of #1
the locating pin in the camshaft (to let you attach sprocket to cam) should be at 12 o'clock also.

thanks, ill go check that out now.
as i stated in another thread, ill be using my 38DGMS later, so the carby is only needed for rego.
ive got an early series RA40 exhaust manifold with twin secondaries......do you think its worth putting them on till i get some extractors made up?
thanks for all your help.
know of anywhere i can get an oil pump for less than $225
for the 18r?
cheers,
M.

A good rule of thumb is to setup the cam with NO.4 inlet and exhaust valves rocking.Or to put it another way the inlet is just starting to open while the exhaust is just about to close.Get them in the middle of the overlap then bring no1 piston up to TDC and fit the chains from there.
Has always worked for me regardless of what 4cyl motor it is.
