Old abused W58

Well with my shifter out I figured it was time for a bit of an oil change. How much oil does the standard MA61 W58 gearbox take, and what oil would you guys recommend for a box that cops a bit of abuse and has synchro's on the way out?
And don't just say penrite shockproof.

Try a synthetic automatic transmission fluid.
2nd gear syncro was tired on mine and notchy to engage. Swapped to ATF and now it's sweet and smooth.

Yup, 1st to 2nd synchro is the worst on mine too. That's usually the one that cops it worst in post people's cars. Damn that traffic light grand prix
How much oil did it take?

IIRC it doesn't all drain when the plug is removed.
Check the level at the fill plug when topping-up. It should be just below the thread.
Try a Renault dealer for synthetic ATF $14 per litre, very good value.

It completely transformed the shitty old C52 in my MR2 when I used it. It's most likely what will be going into my 3SGTE box when I find a way to remove the drain plug as well.
My old box would crunch at when changing into 2nd or third at anything over 5000RPM and in any gear when trying to shift quickly. After I put the Redline oil in it never crunched once over the next 25000 K's before I pulled it out.

You didn't change the oil for 25,000 km ?????????
Is that recommended, or how long it took the wallet to recover

Its exspensive, but not that bad. 100 dollars instead of say 40-50 for some semi decent stuff. All the MR2 owners on www.mr2oc.com swear by the mt90 gear oil. Joshstix has just reiterated the fact that it MUST be good. My box doesnt crunch at all at any RPM, so this redline oil should make it like BUTTER!

I don't think gearbox oil really needs to be changed that often, does it?

Maybe everyone 100,000? i certainly wouldnt change it every 25k unless it was getting noisy or there was an issue.

How often do you change your gear box oil?
Most factory maintenance schedules say to use 100000 km maintenance intervals.

I have always changed it at about 10 - 15k. Mind you, I always gave my car hell (RA23 with 18R-G) when I had it, and now I have lease cars from wiork, so I don't care.
Personally with the Supra, as it won't be a daily driver, it will probably get changed reasonably often, but that then depends on what oil I will be using and if I have any problems.
I'll investigate this redline stuff a little more though based on the feedback
Cheers

I've had some synthetic additive stuff recommended to me. It's aparently designed for old gearboxes. You chuck it in before the new gear oil during a change, and it coats all the gears in some funky goo. Supposed to make gearchanges nicer and prolong the life of the gearbox.
What do you guys think - worth it, or a total crock?

Almost all oil additives are a total crock. Just buy a good quality oil, it already contains everything you need.

Hi,
I can run this shit-hot oil stuff in a P51? I got the synchro on 3rd gear starting to go. Hopefully, it may hold me over for a while.

Well I had an additive recommended to me by someone whome I trust, so I thought I'd give it a go. It's supposed to prolong the life of old gearboxes and help smoothen gear changes.
Did the oil change with Draven yesterday and added that along with some regular 80/80 gearbox oil. Now it feels like a brand new gearbox. Couldn't be happier - no sign of crunching AT ALL.
Whether that's the gear oil change or the additive that did it, I have no idea. All I know is that, all up, it cost me less than $40.

Was this someone a chemical engineer who knows the exact composition of the gearbox oil you're using?
I've said it before and I'll say it again, additives are a crock. Usually they're little more than a thickening agent, and that's what gives you better shift quality in a worn gearbox.
