W58, 225 or 235 mm cover?? Thu, 12 August 2004 11:51 Go to next message
i was looking in a clutch book for my MA61 supra and found that there was 2 different sizes for the clutch cover. 225mm and 235mm. is there any way i can find out what size mine is without actually pulling it out and measuring it??
cheers people.

hmm clutch cover eh Razz I think you mean clutch plate?

If the car is quite stock, I believe that most (if not all 5M-E's) had the 225mm flywheel and clutch and 7M-GE's had the larger flywheel/clutch. (not sure about 5M-GE or 6M-GE's).

Chances are (just an educated guess) that you will have the smaller 225mm flywheel and cltuch if its a 5M-E MA61. Cool

Cheers

lol my bad, you knew what i meant Rolling Eyes
is it just a matter of buying the larger clutch plates, or does it require other modifications to get the larger one to fit??

The flywheels are different for the 2 different clutches - the locating dowels are on a different PCD - so in short they cannot be interchanged without further modification.

The flywheels are actually different and you can't fit a 236mm clutch (also I believe that there is a 240mm clutch plate for the 7mge flywheel listed as well, not 100% tho) on a 225mm flywheel. Also pressure plates are different as well (makes sense).

thanks guys.
the problem is, i am in the process of ( hopefully ) acquiring a MA61 with a 6MGE engine already installed. would it be fair to presume that the 6MGE flywheels are the same as the 5MGE and 7MGE ones?? ( ie for a 236mm clutch plate ) if this is the case, is there anything wrong with buying a complete clutch kit with pressure plate and everything included for the 236mm plate?? is there anything i have overlooked, or am i completely wrong???
thanks. Confused

I actually think that there are 2 x different clutch covers that fit the 236mm plate. I have a brand new heavy duty pressure plate here to suit a 236mm flywheel though (if you are interested). It is an exedy.

I'm pretty sure all 6M-GE's came out of cars only available with an automatic transmission, so if this 6M is in an MA61 it almost certainly has a 5M-E flywheel/clutch on it.

Re: W58, 225 or 235 mm cover?? Mon, 16 August 2004 23:21 Go to previous messageGo to next message
Hey guys, just wondering if you can help me out here...

I have a 1g-gte with w58 behind it, 225mm exedy 5 puck brass button clutch and 50% heavier pressure plate... and it seems to slip in 2nd now that I've got a locker and s02's on the rear...

So I'm wondering... to get a 236mm clutch in there, is it possible to just get my hands on a 7m-ge flywheel and then order an aftermarket 236mm clutch pack? Or is there something more sinister involved? :\

There's something wrong with your clutch if it's slipping behind a 1G... they're hardly torque monsters you know, and it takes a lot to make a brass-button clutch slip!

I know, it seems quite weird, but then 225mm clutch isn't exactly "big"... if I clutch kick in 2nd gear it seems the clutch lets go and not the rear end...

What would you suggest is wrong? I can't imagine what could be wrong personally :\

I just assumed that traction at rear end overcame clamping ability of a (IMO) small clutch...

Might be oil contamination? Previously, or currently....

Cheers

Once they start slipping they are generally stuffed.

Oil contamination? Not a possibility... brand new clutch, installed it myself when I did the manual conversion...

Personally I think its just the fact that the grip at the rear end with s02's outweighs what a 50% heavier duty clutch plate can hold *shrug*

Re: W58, 225 or 235 mm cover?? Tue, 17 August 2004 12:00 Go to previous message
After seeing quite a few new clutches installed and slipping within a short time. It has been suggested to me that the best way to ensure a correct clutch fit, and therefore reduce/eliminate slippage, is to supply the flywheel machinist with the flywheel, clutchplate and pressure plate.

The step on the flywheel is critical, as is the thickness of both the clutch plate, and the pressure plate. If the step and/or your clutch plate are too thick, the pressure plate will have "rocked over centre" ie. the clutch is in the first stages of release! Embarassed Best bet, buy your clutch and pressure plate from the guy who machines your flywheel.

regards Chuck.
