icon4.gif  Why am I crunching 2nd to 3rd gear ?? Fri, 13 August 2004 04:21 Go to next message
I seem to have a problem with my w58 'crunching' heavy 2nd to 3rd upshifts, almost exclusively when at high rpm exiting a decent corner, when upshiting into the straight.

its like the 3rd syncro isnt working, and the teeth go BBBRRRRRRRRR against each other before catching and clunking into gear. like a missed shift, but i KNOW the clutch is properly disengaged.

now before anyone has a crack about some stupid granny shifting, or my ill co-ordinated unko style, i can happily say ITS NOT ME! i originally thought i mustve been a little too eager on the stick and was hitting the shift early, but ive been VERY creful to make sure the clutch is fully disengaged before trying to punch 3rd, and its STILL happens.

the interesting thing is solid shifts in a straight line are fine. i never have issues with the box other than when heavy cornering and really pushing the rpm in 2nd before the shift.

is it perhaps the box fluid sloshing around during a corner? what can i do to help avoid this?

suggestions to different box fluid? fluid levels? over fill it a bit? additives? add a bit of auto trans fluid (heared that once somewhere).

its a mkiv supra w58 in top nick, i dont think it should be doing this. any suggestions would be appreciated.

cheers
ed

I'd assume that all of the shifter bushings are OK, so then it probably will fall down into the area of shift fork or damaged/worn synchro.

Did this suddenly start happening, or slowly get worse ?

At high revs, if you shift slow, and all other situations, is the shift OK ?

To see if it is the synchro, drain the oil and see if there are brass style silt in there Sad

Cheers

The fact that it happens at high rpm only points to worn synchros. Pretty common on older W58's. Solution: rebuild box, or even better, get a late-model W58 with double-row synchros on 2nd and 3rd. Quick-shifting goodness!

This is the noisy box Ed? The one that came out of the JZA80 that flipped eleventy billion times one night?

Synchros is what it sounds like.

its IS a late model box. reasonably low km's too.

and also, yeah, hapens at high RPM but ONLY when cornering... NEVER when shifting hard along a straight.

and dave: yeah, its the box that flipped eleventy billion times, but its not noisy. that was me having the tailshaft centre bearing installed upside down Rolling Eyes

is the gbox oil level low? and it is sloshing to one side, thats why it only happens when cornering?

Just an idea.

See thread titled 'Old abused W58' for lubricant suggestions to soothe those syncros.
Otherwise check clutch disengagement, oil level.

Ed, when cornering at massif G forses you is prolly forgetting to be depressing the pedal on the far left.

I am liking low oil or too high, or viscosity too high or that you simply cannot drive.

Maybe the innards are still upside down? they may have flipped eleventy billion and one half times.

Solution = boost + auto

nah i know the history of the box quite well. id say its got maybe 60k on it now, around 40k when i bought it. the donor was a converted auto to man JZA80 (2jzge) and the box was purchased new from toyota at the time of the conversion (in japan).

i drove the box in the jza80 in syd on several occasions - never had a drama, and i dont think it was injured on the evening of "dude, I flipped da car". Ive never really had a drama in my supra either - ive just noticed this occuring (not just recently either), and i figure its now about time to see wtf is going on.
