Basically what power output are these boxes capable of holding. And in terms of shift what are they like in comparison to the soarer/supra boxes, and also in comparison overall. Conversion kits can be found for these as well can't they. Also it is basically to suit 380hp at the engine, one of these should be fine shouldn't it, can you recommend anything other than an R154, i'm speciffically after a manual.

Cheers

A late-model W58 (ie with the steel sandwich plate) will be fine with 380hp. Just don't be brutal with it like I was.

Toyota rate the W58 <300 bhp.

Yes, but Toyota had to worry about warranty claims and a general public who don't know how to drive. That doesn't mean the gearbox can't hold a lot more power if treated right.

Indeed. Still, the manufacturer considers them reliable at <300, anything above is 'take your chances'.
They low gear syncros don't seem to last at <300. Above must further shorten their lives.

Torque vs weight figures will be the factor that governs how much powah that the box can handle. I have had no reliability issues so far with around the 350hp mark.
Imagine the W58 in a 300hp turbo diesel 10 tonne truck.
Incidentally how much power does Toyota rate the Corona 4 speed at? (sorry, I do not recall the gearbox code) I am sure that you will find that plenty of drag rotaries have far exceeded the recommended power rating - repeatedly.

The W58 is a good box if treated well. As stated, you can break anything with enough abuse.

I would also take a W58 over an R154 any day... a quarter of the price, and stronger. Even if you do break one, buy another and bolt it up.. you can do this 2 or 3 times and still be ahead financially. Seems a pretty easy decision to me.

Indeed, there are plenty of sub-10 second rotaries with W40's.

Yeah, I'll just run a thicker oil and it will be all good. Wink

Have no idea what other Toyota boxes are rated at. My question to them was specific to the W58. Rated is rated not peak.

Well yes actually. I had a W58 behind my 7MGTE with no problems at all... to be "safe" I then "upgraded" it to an R154. I fitted the "strong" R154, rebuilt with new synchros etc, and ended up selling the car not much longer... and the new owner has since busted the box - and the guy who bought my W58 is still driving along with it behind a turbo'd Falcon six.

I'm sure that our friend wastegate, who has broken a handful of R154's, will agree. Also this is one of the few things Zoom has right.. these things are fragile despite their good name. If you search the forums you'll find that they break regularly... search for "thrust washer" and you shall be enlightened...

Er... you were the one who just finished saying they were rated to 300hp. Correct me if I'm wrong, but the fact that Norbie's Supra has more than 300hp at the wheels means that the box is seeing more than 300hp.

I think Norbie is aware of the need to depress the clutch pedal, the old man has been driving long enough! Very Happy

Just to re-enforce what a lot of people have already said...

The conversion in my car was done approx 5 years ago with a 7MGTE and a regular w58. The gearbox hasn't been touched since then, and is running perfectly. It was getting a little notchy going from first to second, but since the gearbox oil was changed yesterday, it feels like a new gearbox. I'm putting just shy of 200rwkw through it if that helps.
