howdy...
im currently carrying out a brake upgrade on my 86, im sort of following the peugeot disc, hilux calliper and toyota strut design.
i already have the discs....peugeot 604 slotted and vented rotors. (273mm)
i got st141 struts which have the same calliper bolt spacing (100mm) i was going to use these. but not sure if the hub will fit with the disc?? does it?
also anyone using alloy callipers and not cast, i want to keep the unsprung mass down...i looked at r32GTS callipers.
what do you guys think, should i just go with what others have done, which is proven to work.....or has antone else done/got other ideas?
help would be great. thanks

First decide what brake calipers you want, then buy them.
HiLux 4wd 4-spots are a well know conversion, will work, often on older Celicas. They are more heavy, but you may not notice the weight, depends on how developed your car is. You could make a adapter plate to fit the AE86 strut, but it may be easier to use the Corona strut and change the spring mount over. You will have to machine the disk down to 266mm, use the conona hub, drill the disk holes bigger, and machine 1mm off the mounting face of the disk. Easy.
I gather Mazda RX-7 4 spots would also be a common upgrade. Are lighter. I am guessing this would be the more common upgrade in Japan. That or Skyline brake calibers. I am told they are all made by Sumitomo anyway, so the whole Toyota vs Nissan isn't realy applicable. I am sure there is a mounting kit in Japan where you can just bolt on these calipers, but I am sure you can find someone to just make the adapter plate.
Just buy the calipers you want first, then make it fit.
But on the light AE86, you don't realy need 4 spots. Any vented disk brake made to fit in a 14" rim will work fine with some decent pads. I used early Tarago brakes once with cheap pads, worked well.

The hilux LN106 calipers have a 90mm bolt hole spacing.
You use the XT130 struts.

having had a AE86 at WRC level rallying {perth ,91}using vented brakes and the original jdm spec caliper was enough for us , so I cannot see anyone needing 4 spot calipers for anything greater than serious track work only or top level rallying, after saying all that my new car {AE86} uses hilux calipers and we have trouble getting heat into them, using std rear jdm discs and single spots, at the time I was looking to upgrade my brakes jdm discs and calipers were hard to come by, however both sons have now come by jdm front disc brakes and calipers for $400 far cheaper than any brake conversion and still keep struts original!!.

4 spots may be overkill, but if you do it all yourself you can have the hilux upgrade on your car for as cheap as $700 if you shop around. having said that you can feel the difference in handling that the longer corona strut provides.

Yes there is a difference. They look sort of the same, same design. But a brake caliper made to fit over a 20mm thick disk is always that much wider than one made to fit over a 9mm disk. They are very similar brakes also fitted to RA60 Celica, YR20 Tarago, Cressidas and lots of stuff from that era.
If the GT Apex vented brakes are made to fit in a 13" wheel, I would rather get the Celica brakes and make them fit. As they would be cheaper, and are made to fit in a 14" wheel.
Is the stub axle the same?
