Hey i'm sorta new at all this and was wondering .. i've got a ra23 celica and want to get to the speedo to connect up a speedo cable. I think i need to take out the heater contolls but i'm not sure out to do it. i don't want to stuff things up and start cracking things.

You really don't need to, or want to remove the dash, just to hook up a speedo cable. It is fairly tight behind the speedo but it is do able.
If you really must pull the instrument cluster out, No1 undo three nuts under steering column and drop the column. No2 carefully pull the heater control knobs off, prize out the plastic surround around the heater controls, and remove the screws which hold the cable box in place. No3 remove ashtray and remove phillips head screws. No4 remove the screws above the clock/tacho/vent etc. Your Instrument panel can now be pulled backward a few centimetres. Unhook all electrical connections, and put the dash face aside, now you remove the 4 screws that hold the tach/speedo cluster in place, undo electrical connection and remove speedo coupling from behind speedo! Re-assemble in reverse order.

regards Chuck.
