conversion 4ac into ke70 Sat, 14 August 2004 11:59 Go to next message
i know its not much, yet i have a 4ac engine and im pretty sure its better than the stock 4kc

so is this an easy and cheap conversion to do as i dont have the funding or experience to do an age ke70 yet.

also would i get much of a gain if any out of this conversion?

thanks

Scott

its not gonna be much better.
it would be really easy though. just grab an ae71 crossmember
better still if you dont have the car yet. just buy an ae71 with a 4ac already

we all need to start somewhere...very true, at least you are having a go and not paying someone else to do it for you.

an ae71 corolla is a pretty common car so a trip to most auto wreckers should provide the goods. couldnt really tell you about cost though, never having bought such an item myself, however i would have a guess and say around $150 or so.

if you do a search on this topic im sure you will find some info on specifics.

have fun !

thanks

over all just says try this engine instead lol

yet tells me i need a new gearbox for that engine.

anyone know a wreaker in sydney that will have a ae70 xmember to save me calling around tommorow and monday?

Edit also, im guessing the ke70 box wont be alright as others said change it to a t-50
so what boxes can i put in my ke70 if i put the 4AC engine in it and what would be easyest /cheapest,

also the ke70 standard diff be ok or will i need a diffrent diff to?

you will need a T50 with longer rear extension housing.

THere are two types, and each depends on whether u want to go swapping the diff as well.

#1. T50 from AE71 or AE86, with AE71 tailshaft
#2. T50 from TE72 (t18 liftback), with tailshaft and complete diff from same car.

a ke70 gearbox will not be easy to put onto a 4a.

ae86 and AE71 T50's are identical, thus either will do fine.

It will bolt in so long as you take the greabox crossmember off the donating car and keep it with the new T50

Re: conversion 4ac into ke70 Sun, 15 August 2004 07:48 Go to previous messageGo to next message
Okay, to summarise;

From an AE71, take:
# AE71 engine crossmember
# AE71 T50 transmission (*)
# AE71 transmission crossmember (*)
# AE71 tailshaft (*)

If the exhaust is on the same side of the car for 4A-C and 4K-C, it may be possible to use a standard 4A-C manifold and mate it to the KE70 exhaust at the collector or firewall. The 4K-C exhaust flange won't fit the 4A-C. So, if you don't have the manifold/front pipe section for your 4A-C, add to your list the following;
# 4A-C exhaust manifold and front pipe

The standard differential will be okay, but if you plan on 4A-GE later you could, as Whitzl suggested, replace (*) above with the following;
# TE72 T50 transmission
# TE72 transmission crossmember
# TE72 tailshaft
# TE72 differential, complete

This will give you a 6.7" T differential which should be capable of holding up to a 4A-GE later and for which many LSD centres are available.

Don't forget that you have to change the clutch, from cable to hydraulic. This involves new clutch kit, hydraulic master and slave cylinders, and you also have to get the pedal box from the AE71 and put that into the KE70. And I can tell you from experience, it is a bastard of a job. If your going to do an engine conversion on the KE70 make it worthwhile. Dont worry bout the 4ac in my opinion not worth it.

Agreed, but when this conversion is done the groundwork will be laid for 4A-GE install.

True, but why not spend the little extra and make it worth the conversion. Instead of doin basicly two conversions. When doing a conversion little things pop up and money is spent. I think it is better to get ti done in one go.

I gather that he owns a KE70 and has a spare 4A-C. I agree, I'd not bother for the questionable benefit of a 4A-C 'upgrade', though it's not my car so who am I to say?

I put a 4AG in my KE70, and it's surprising the little bits that do pop up... Sure theres the Xmembers, the pedals+clutch cylinder, the tailshaft, then there's little things like the rad support panel and the speedo cable. I went to my local wrecker, and bought a chopped up in the back, but still otherwise complete, AE71, that way I had all the bits I needed. Sure I paid $250 for it, by the KE70 only cost $70! I wouldn't suggest the 4AC is a great thing to put in there though, they seem to be less abuse tolerant than the poor old 4K. Collect all your bits together, and put a 4AG in there first up, worth every second of your time. Evil or Very Mad

Surely you could hook up with someone in US/NZ to mail you one, where they should be far more plentiful?

Or go sidedrafts! <<note: this is said only to incite an anti-carb+4A-G rant from mrshin
