Connecting 6v siren to 12v battery Sun, 15 August 2004 09:10 Go to next message
I bought a siren for my alarm recently and surprisingly the siren is supposed to be operated on 6 volts!! What the?

When I connect it to 12v battery, it will sound constantly but when connected to 6 volts it behaves normally (it is silent until I connect the blue cable to positive).

Why on Earth did they create a 6v siren for cars and how am I supposed to wire this up to my alarm?

Don't know...the thing wasn't supplied with any instructions or specs (how stupid). It looks like a good quality siren (Black Widow) just can't figure out why they made it 6v.

What does it matter about current drain anyway?

It matters when your trying to regulate the 12v down to 6v.

Hmm. I would assume it would draw around 300ma. (Based on the fact that 12v's use around 150ma)...but that is just a guess.

So you're suggesting the use of voltage regulators, hopefully not resistors?

It is pathetic to buy a car alarm siren and it's not even designed to work on the right voltage!

Nice find, cheap too. I assume this burns off additional voltage as heat, so it needs a small heatsink too?

Seems kinda unnecessary/pathetic that the siren needs this though... Mad

Cheers for the help.
