Anyone ever worked/turbo'd a 5VZ-FE Sun, 15 August 2004 09:14 Go to next message
Hi all,

Just curious to know if you know anyone that may have worked a 5VZ-FE (3.4L V6 - eg. Prado 4WD motor). One of these engines may soon come available to me and was curious to know what sort of power I can get from them. I know TRD do a bolt on Supercharger, but it will cost a fortune. I'm thinking more along the lines of a turbo or two. Or maybe, up the compression (if possible), cams, injectors, exhaust etc.

Drop me a line if you can help and thanks. Cheers, Kevin
P.S. The Levin has long gone, just kept the name!

Prettymuch any motor can be modified, but I can't imagine many will have done anything with the prado engine. Remember that this will be a sod of a thing to convert to RWD, being a 4WD from factory... also being a "Vee" engine it will need a lot of room to TT properly.

From there, anything's possible.. a low-boost turbo setup is probably ideal, just look up drive.com.au to find out what compression it runs standard - anything over 10:1 severely damages your chances of a decent power upgrade from forced induction. I woudl suggest that the standard ECU and injectors will be your next hurdle after this.. chances are the engine itself is pretty sturdy.. but again it's all guesswork!

7M-Brisbane : Firstly thanks for your reply, but why do you think it will be a bugger to convert to rear wheel drive. All you need is an adaptor bell housing to mate up to a W58 or similar etc, make some new engine mounts and the usual modifications for fitting a different motor and bolt her all up. I wasn't thinkin about using the original g/box and transfer case for a second.

I think I still will be able to get two turbo's in, but I will have to find out what size (eg T28 x 2) once I look at pistons/compression.

As to compression the standard compression ratio is 9.6:1, I still think this is a little high to be wacking boost into it or to much boost.

Cheers, Kevin

im pretty sure the VZ series motor in the new v6 hilux comes with an R series gearbox (as in R154 but not) so if this were true you could use that bellhousing and an R154 box, hope this is not heresay, but im going on what the guy at toyota said, when i was looking into this engine myself, I reckon its a goer, no one else has got a worked one, and if the UZFE motors are anything to go by........

Yup, they have an R151F transmission which means the bellhousing is compatible with the R154 Supra 5-speed.

Why would it be a bugger to convert to RWD, that's how they come from the factory? These engines aren't mounted east-west & have never been available in a front wheel drive version.
That was the 3VZ in the Camry/Avalon.

Have you tried looking up E-bay for a supercharger?
There are a million of them going 2nd hand in the US.
I'm trying to find one for a 1MZ-FE, which are really rare.

Search for Toyota Supercharger in the Completed Listings section to get an idea how much.
There is currently a whole engine with supercharger going for US$2700.

By the time you add in custom turbo manifolds, etc, I think you'd go over this kind of price.
Don't forget that the supercharger kit comes with everything (boost controller, 7th injector if needed, piggyback computer)

Hi Guys, new kid on the block here, ive looked at doing this to an ra28, was looking at the Camry motor cause it's a full alloy motor instead of cast block like in the Prado's, depends what you're putting it in, you could use engine mounts and pipework from a prado to change it to rwd configuration.
This motor is just a choped down lexus v8 (1uz) from what i can gather so it's pretty strong, the same motor is in the new Kluger, Prado(4litre) and the Hilux so should be arround for a while.
Was wondering what box would fit behind it but you've answered my question, i figured the supercharger option would be easier than going the turbo because of the pluming problems.
Just do a search on 1/3/5vz for info.

cheers
