4K with 2 speed toyoglide :D rocks!!

hey all,
fair enough most of you don't even know what a toyoglide actually is but...
spent the weekend taking out the K motor from my sisters '67 KE10, and replacing it with a 4K (small port = 25mm!!).
and what a difference 12mm of stroke (and 200cc) can make!!
before the car was 'a bit of a slug'.. hills even in low were pretty sucky..
now with the 1300, hills are no issue, car is very driveable, and happily cruises at 100km/hr. will hold low until over 90km/hr if desired! kickdown during wet corners is 'much more interesting' than previously (15psi in tires also helps )
anyway, i was pretty sceptical before about the 2 speed, suggesting that the 3 speed traumatic was a better option, but i can safely say that i would be happy with a 4K'd 2 speed as a daily driver (if it was a KE10 ).
just thought i'd get this out in the open

I worked on a 1966 RT40 Corona last week. It had the 2R motor and Toyoglide. I am guessing the 2R is about 1600cc. Were all Toyoglides the same unit or were they different sizes to match the motor?
My KE55 originaly had a 4K with Holden Trimatic. It was ok I guess. Nothing special, but it worked.

heya Jonny,
i believe there are different ones. i have a toyota factory manual for a 2 speed toyoglide, but it's larger than the KE10 one, and i think it's the R series.. i'll have a closer look at some stage.
bugman.
KE10/11 - 720kg
KE15/17 - 730-740kg
KE20, approx 750-780kg

I got the Toyoglide 2 speed in my ke30 about to be replaced with the 4-speed sitting on the garage floor when I figure out how..
2 speed rocks.. there's just something way cool (in an uncool and funny way) about having only 2 gears

what do you mean not much control?? by adjusting the kickdown a little, this has very good characteristics.. kicks down at the right time depending on throttle position, and stays in first if you want it to...
you have an OHC 5K? if not, could you please explain what this high cam is?

Surely you've seen stickers in older Toyota's proudly advertising "HiCam" (or something like that)? A bit like the "Super Responsive" sticker in the engine bay of my MA61... quite amusing when applied to a 5M-E. It's marketing wank basically.

i know what "HiCam" is, but many people seem to be convinced their is a difference (even some toyota ex-employees i know) but i am yet to be convinced..
what it seems to mean in practive is "highly restricted", ie smaller intake ports (down to 25mm vs 27 or 30mm), vac operated secondaries, more restrictive air cleaner etc.
mmm "super responsive"... i don't think that applies to any K motor

I had an old MS40 with a 2 speed Toyoglide behind the M. It was a hoot. I'm sure it would be bigger than a K series Toyoglide. I kept the badge so I could put it on my 1UZ powered auto wagon.

also found a site saying the ke20 is 830 kg...
I might have to search again.. minimum of 800kg for a 1g.. would like to get a car to put away and do something major to.

Hullo Benjamin,
According to my workshop manual these are the weights :
KE 30 two door : 820 kilogram
KE 30 four door : 830 kilogram
KE 35 : 860 kilogram
KE 35 SL and SR 870 kilogram
add 15 kilogram each time for automatic transmission cars.
anyone confirm this?

according to code of practice for light vehicle mods, the "typical weight" to be used for figuring out mods for vehicles is:
corolla KE11 1200 auto sedan = 746kg
corolla KE20 1200 auto sedan = 778kg
corolla KE25 1200 coupe = 756kg
KE35 auto coupe = 864kg
KE30 auto sedan = 891kg
KE36 panel van = 841kg.
these may not be accurate, but are used by engineers as guidelines. for my blueslip for my 15, i had to get weighbridge printout as the KE15 was not on his books.

HiCam was a term used to describe the "relative" positioning of the camshaft in the K motors - since it was a little higher than most pushrod engines, they called it a HiCam. Or so i'm told?
Hey man, dont knock the Super Responsive!
Pimp Bot has both HiCam and SuperResponsive properties!!

THE WITZL: Are you joking or do you still not get it. "HiCam" does not mean anything. The cam is not higher!
Tonight, my TE37 is about 940kg. 530kg front, 410kg rear.

My KE70 has got 'hicam' on one side, and '1.6' on the other. Been meaning to swap these both for Royal Saloon sometime though!

YOU STEAL MY IDEA SHIN!!! Although i'm going for "Super Saloon", along with "sprinter XX grande", and maybe something else.
Jonny - i do realise it means nothing. My point was that it was a half baked marketing ploy, based on the relatively USELESS fact that the cam was just a little higher in the block than most other manufacturers pushrod engines. I really made no difference to performance and means nothing.
But it sounds cool!
