gearing questions regarding supra tranny vs my gze zenki AE86 Tue, 17 August 2004 06:09 Go to next message
I have the chance to buy a 7mgte supra tranny, 5spd. I'm unsure about a few things. Ive done research and i can't tell if its a w58 or r154. All ino is that its a jdm version from that supra motor. I can get a bellhousing that will mate any w series tranny, is the r154 just a renamed w series? Or is the bellhousing completly different. Another thing is that what is the shifter position on these two trannys and what kind of gearing will i get from my 86 corrola gts? Will it be to tall to short? I'm told the stock t50 with a gze boosted will be very busy with alot of shiftin.

Thx all tommy

I thought only the R154s came behind the turbo 7Ms, so I would guess you have an R154. You may well know more than me there though.

As for the T50, I use one with a boosted GZE and find the ratios are fine. First may be a little short, but beyond that its all OK. If you want to make the entire box taller or shorter think about changing your diff ratio instead.

With the stock S-series rear end it pulls around 3500 at 110km/h in 5th. Giving a max speed of about 220-250 depending on fuel cut.

The R154 is an Aisin-Warner box, while the W5x series are made by Toyota. Totally different gearboxes, so bellhousings are incompatible. You'll find the R154 behind turbo 7M's, and the W58 behind non-turbo 7M's.

Check the tech section FAQ's to learn about the differences between the R154 and W5x. (Wouldn't it be nice if everyone checked this before posting?)

IMHO, it would be major overkill to mate the T series motor to the R154

My thoughts still stand. The W5x box will be plenty

Ive been lookin for a w series trans, but i stumbled upon well a free tranny. The free tranny looks like a R series so maybe now u know where im comin from lol. Anyway, a freind of mine has a few old coronas and a few old supras. I think the supra is an 83-85. I dont know which motor is in it yet, im going to check tommorow, but im really hoping its got a w* in it. "crossing fingers"

Mating a r154 to a 4agte is major overkill. a w series box will do fine.

An 83-85 Supra will have a W58 in it (provided it's manual of course). Grab it if you can, buy an off-the-shelf conversion kit, and bolt it in. Note that you can't get conversion kits for 4A -> R154, so bin that idea straight away. Using an R154 is silly anyway, it's probably bigger than your engine! Laughing
