Yea insurance is a b*%ch isn't it? I wasn' originally going to buy one of these babies, I love them lowered with some alloys. But realistically thew insurance is a real killer. If you really want a Soarer the V8's seemed slightly cheaper to insure, or there is the 3rd Party only insurance option, but if it's on a financed car thats crazy.
Like smt_007 said, its definately the right price. You could always settle on a MR2 thats what I did, and the insurance is less than half. Just a bit light on in the space department .

Im not sure about mr2's, but my mate said its like 3k comprehensive for a bathurst mr2. Katz... how old are you?, obviously if your under 25 comprehensive insurance is a killer for cars like this.

Katzamarang just bear in mind that while you can ring up an insurance company, or stick the numbers in their online quote it doesn't mean you are covered. I looked at teh TT Soarer, about the same price to insure as you using Dad's 60% NCB, go a bit excited. But when you speak to them(NRMA or most companies in my case) they wont insure you as a listed driver until you are 29(NRMA) or 25(other companies). Just car insurance, which would cover me in my own name for a $2800 premium, would only insure the car up to $8500, which was $4000 less than I would have paid for the car....If you are going to get a Turbo car, either get 3rd Party Prop & risk it, or wait till you are off your Red P's on onto your Greens P's, then Shannons to consider you....Things may have changed, but it's worth checking.

yeah its rather confusing, but from what i can understand my mum is the "main driver" and we pay an extra $700 which is in the $2200 for me as another listed driver. anyone over 25 can drive the car and be insured but im the only one under 25 that is covered. this is with SGIO, RAC wont cover imported cars and i havent tried any others yet..thats tomorrows fun
what are green P's?
also:
this may seem like a stupid question but what is a drift car??

Ahhhhhhhh I didn't see that you were in Perth. Forget all the crap I said about P's, its NSW's stupid provisional liscence thing.
A drift car is a car that is set up to Drift Usually AE86's, Supras, Skylines etc...Cars have tonnes of Torque(thus usually Turbo cars). The aim is to drive a car around the circuit in one continuous slide, takes a lot of skills. Just search the forums for "drift"

Over in NSW, we have 12 months of red P's and then like 18months of green P's. Drift cars are cars with a crap load of power (common example trueno ae86). Normally you take corners fast, and get the rear to slide out whilst holding it throughout the corner...basically
Here's a fine example

That's good news - it means that it's had the shit flogged out of it for 90% of the time and probably has a bit of "drift damage" from the previous driver going sideways into poles, gutters, trees etc. I'd run, not walk, away!
Try a specialist imported car insurer like Just Cars, Famous Car Insurance or similar. The usual guys like RAC, AAMI etc will charge like a wounded bull - do you really want to pay them $40 a week just to have your car insured? If you're under 25 and have no insurance history look for an austalian delivered, non turbo car.

I wouldnt buy an "ex drift car".. but then again it might just be a tool trying to sound cool while he is selling the car.. drifting a soarer is stupid..
Personally for insurance I would go 3pp and risk it

But spending so much on a car when you are still quite young is not always a great idea, maybe you should consider something a little cheaper, like a nice old Celica or Corolla, and when you get a bit more experience and money, move onto something more powerful like an MZ20/GZ20 (80's) Soarer or Supra,
It is very easy to get carried away and dream about owning a perfect awesome car, but realistically, you would be living beyond your means, and you can't afford it... I severly doubt that anyone on these forums had enough money to buy a JZ Soarer or Supra as a first car
If you want to buy it, go ahead, just my 2c

my "1st" car is a jz soarer im definately living outside my means and cant be insured comprehensively... spent about 20k on it after respray.. more if u include parts car and such.
Its not that bad, as long as you dont drive like a dick and tailgate anyone and be totally stupid, 3pp is fine. In the chance that someone hits you they "should" have insurane to cover you.. and in my case there, market value is around 3k... on a car thats had shite loads spent on it.. so for someone like me.. its not worth it.

Well, there was bound to be one person
But what I was trying to get at, was that you don't seem to know very much about cars in general (no offence), so it would be great to start on something more affordable, and when you break it, you won't be in debt for the rest of your life,

I can see where your coming from.. but really, 91 soarer parts(and engine parts) arent that expensive or hard to come by, as there is so many at wreckers and stuff prices arent as high. and if u go through buying a few cars before you buy the car u want.. there is alot of money wasted there(through depreciation and having to fix those cars etc) that could be spend on the car you really want

True True,..
But,
Soarer = $12k - $15k
Insurance = $3k minimum
In my eyes, that money would be better spent on a house, and if your smart, you could buy a brand new $50k car within 5 years...

this will be my second car, the first car is starting to die...but i can still get about 6000 for it. as far as i can see its better to grab a car that you want now rather than buy a bomb that u will probably end up spending heaps on for repairs. but the insurance has stopped me getting this car...minimum i found was $2200 and thats in my mums name.
id love to get an old celica but a couple of my friends got them and they all have around 300 000 kms on them and sound like they could blow up at any second

That's very true - however as you say a twin-turbo is the car you want now, not necessarily the car you need as the insurance is expensive. Any import or turbo is going to cost a lot more in insurance than an australian delivered, non turbo.
I'm trying to think of nice cars that are less than 15 years old, reliable, australian delivered, non-turbo, fast and insurance friendly... but I can't!
You're almost 18 now, if you own the soarer for 4 years it'll cost you $10K just to insure it - money that's better spent on a house or invested rather than given to the insurance company. You can always buy a turbo car later on when insurance isn't so pricey. But hey, it's your cash - spend it how you please!

well thanks for everyones advice , i have taken it onboard and have decided to look around for something cheaper where i can actually put everything in my name and start up a no claims bonus thing for later on when i can afford insurance.
my criteria now is non turbo, less than 150,000kms and less than $8000. shouldnt be too hard.
