One 1G-GTE Flywheel solution. Wed, 18 August 2004 05:53 Go to next message
Hi Guys, the 1G-GTE and 1G-GZE flywheels are getting hard to find. One solution, which will be trialled this week, is to utilize a "3Y HiLux flywheel". The 6 crankshaft attachment bolt holes need to be re drilled. Leave this to an engineering workshop! Cost app. $100.00, for drilling. A small adapter ring also needs to be made for the centre of the flywheel, as the 3Y cranshaft end is larger than the 1G. Supply the machinist with the 3Y flywheel and the 1G Auto flex plate, and he can make the ring. The Flex plate also serves as a guide for the re drilling process.
A huge advantage in using the 3Y flywheel, is the abundance of decent clutch kits available for the Hi Lux.

regards Chuck.

I cant understand why you would want to go to those legnths and expense of doing all that work, when a 5m flywheel has a 225mm cluch disc and and six bolt flywheel. You will also find that a 7mge has a 6 bolt flywheel which is 236mm which is the same as a gen 3 1g, though the only downside to this is that you will have to source a 7mge clutch, though considering that Adailade performance clutch offers a 1500kg pplate and 9 puck button clutch as the top of their range and a host of other clutches to suit this flywheel. Though one thing is that you will have to shorten your bearing carrier by about 10mm. Some food for though.

The lack of the M series flywheels in Canberra, and the availability of a 3Y flywheel from the project vehicle. 'Tis a case of working with what you have. If I had access to "M" series I would have checked it out. Nice to hear that 5M and 7M will both work. Thanks for the info.

Chuck, I think that you will find that you can do the same with an 18R flywheel (flywheels RU)

Ah you can also get a Custom lightned flywheel for a 1ggte from Adialade performance clutch centre aswell, at the price of $660. So if your pockets are deep enough. Another option that i am unsure of is the 3sgte flywheel, i know the 1g and 3s clutch are the same but havnt had a chance to compare flywheels.

3S flywheels have 8 bolts to the crank flange whereas the 3T/1G have only 6

i am also looking for a new clutch/flywheel setup and know of another. Maybe we could organise a group purchase or somthing.

I rang the forum sponsor today (pittwater brake and clutch) but as far as i can tell i dont know if they can do much over the phone, they hadnt done any 1ggte's before but are finding out a price on heavy duty trd setup.

5M and 7M flywheels have an off-centre bolt on them, so they wont fit a 1G without machining.

The engineering workshop contracted to "re drill" the flywheel, has simply elongated the original 6 bolt holes. Each bolt hole had to be elongated 1.76mm outward from centre. We were informed that there are standards, which dictated that we could not drill between existing holes. However if the holes had been filled/plugged, there would have been no dramas in re drilling. The job is done now, with the flywheel/clutch and pressure plate mounted to the engine. The bellhousing has been mated to the Hi Lux 4 x 4 gearbox, just fabricating a new mount for the RH side chassis rail.

We had a couple of 18R flywheels to choose from, but the Hi Lux flwheel had recently been machined, and had an almost new clutch and presssure plate attached.

$280.00 plus shipping was the asking price for a 1GG flywheel. so $114.50 for spacer and elongating, I think we came out of this pretty well!

regards Chuck.
