Car Modifications Survey

Hi, I need your help to complete a school assignment on Car Modifications. I am required to hand out surveys on this topic to get the views of people who are affected on a national level. I only need about 20-30 responses so if you don't want to do this survey you certainly don't have to.
The questions are:
1. Your age?
2. Your sex?
3. What kind of car do you own?
4. How has it been modified?
5. What is the result of the modifications?
6. How much have you spent on modifications?
7. Why have you modified your car?
8. Do you find you are more of a target for police?
9. Is modifying your car worth the hassle and cost?
10. Is your car road legal?
11. Why do you think car modifications are so popular and in what age groups?
12. Any other comments.
Thanks heaps, I really need your help and it is greatly appreciated.
Thanks again
Aden.

trd_celica85 wrote on Wed, 18 September 2002 14:24 | 5. What is the result of the modifications?

A fun car to drive
trd_celica85 wrote on Wed, 18 September 2002 14:24 | 6. How much have you spent on modifications?
|
Too much... Over $15k I think... Blowing up a bunch of engines doesn't help...
trd_celica85 wrote on Wed, 18 September 2002 14:24 | 7. Why have you modified your car?
|
It was a slow POS.... And because I wanted a car with power and handling but wasn't willing to fork out for a new car.
trd_celica85 wrote on Wed, 18 September 2002 14:24 | 8. Do you find you are more of a target for police?
|
Not really... My attitude toward them more than anything else gets me in trouble with the piggies.

|
Yup!
trd_celica85 wrote on Wed, 18 September 2002 14:24 | 10. Is your car road legal?
|
Yep. Except for the 17x7.5" wheels....
trd_celica85 wrote on Wed, 18 September 2002 14:24 | 11. Why do you think car modifications are so popular and in what age groups?
|
There are two groups, those that do it for status and looks. And those that do it for the fun of doing it.
Basically we mod 'coz we want something better than what we've got.

Result of mods: Having what I think is a nice car to look at and to drive and being able to beat most of the crap-tastic rice cars on the road
How much spent on mods: Probably around 10 - 11 grand but in other words, too much...
Why have you done mods: Because I wanted to improve the car in all ways possible... But there are a few more mods that I want to do aswell...
Target for police: Hell yeah... When the stereo is blaring and the exhaust is 'revving', the cops seem to pop out of nowhere...
Is it worth it: Yes and no. Some things are worth the time and money but others I could've done without.
Is it road legal: Do I really have to say???
Why are mods popular: Because today's cars are becoming crappier with less power, worse design features and so on... People up to the age of 30 - 35 want to improve their cars by performing certain mods such as suspension and engine for a smoother ride and more power...
Other comments: I think I have the longest post ... J/K...

It seems to be popular with all age groups - from the young kid restoring his old 4 cyl car to make it better to the rich guy rebuilding his E type jag from scratch

Modifying your car is fun - as long as you follow the law - and not go out to drive like an idiot . Idiots who get out there and plow their modified car into a tree street racing for example get what the deserve - its just a shame genuine car enthusiasts hobbies get dragged down with them

How is using different spark plugs a mod? How is getting a new paint jobbie a mod??? That's just plain maintainance & repairs. Using that logic.

2. Your sex? Male
3. What kind of car do you own? 1988 Corolla
4. How has it been modified? Champion spark plugs, Caltex petrol, Castrol Oil, Kitten Carwash, Armourguard. I also use a hoover vaccume cleaner to clean the inside & other various "ACTUAL" mods.
5. What is the result of the modifications? It runs.
6. How much have you spent on modifications? Who knows?
7. Why have you modified your car? So that it will drive.
8. Do you find you are more of a target for police? Nope.
9. Is modifying your car worth the hassle and cost? Yep.
10. Is your car road legal? No, but that's only coz I haven't put the new rego sticker on yet.
11. Why do you think car modifications are so popular and in what age groups? Coz boys like toys.

Sorry Nark,
But there is at least one more group you should add to the modifiers category...one which, I might add, is probably not overrepresented here. The group to which I refer is one which modifies vehicles closer to their (personal) interpretation of what the car should have been like ex-factory.
In my case, I am in my mid 30's, have two "modified" cars, and have had the mods done (or am in the process thereof) for the above reason primarily, and for reasons of performance etc. secondary.
First car:
KE 70 "XX" Corolla
Mods: 100KW 4AGE, 4-2-1 hand-fabricated extractors into 2/1/2" mandrel-bent exhaust.
car is otherwise completely stock (especially as regards appearance). Net result is a car virtually indistinguishable from simlar Corollas on the road, but with performance which is satisfactory.
Second car:
MX83 Cressida
Engine: 1UZ-FE V8 (Still being wired, but otherwise installed)
Modified stock headers, into 2/1/2" single exhaust system.
Suspension will be upgraded with "performance" springs and shocks
Brakes will remain stock (4-wheel discs) with the addition of metallic pads and DOT 4 fluid
Wheels will be changed for 16" rims, primarily for the better performance characteristics, rather than looks (Otherwise I'd go for 17 or 18" rims)
Again, this my interpretation of the way this car should have left the factory - sort of like a "baby" LS400.
Naturally, neither of these cars will be everyone's "cup of tea", but they will perform as well as, or better than, more modern "contemporaries", whilst remaining cheaper to obtain (and, thus, avoiding the finance pitfalls!)
To the thread originator (trd_celica85), I hope this has been of assistance.
(BTW, for those wanting more info on the Cressida project, I am putting together a website which will include full "coverage" of the project with photos etc).

Age: 17
Sex: Male
Car: 1987 AE82 Toyota Corolla Seca CS
Modifications:
AC To GE
Pod Air Filter
Genie 4-2-1 Headers
2" Mandrel Bent Exhaust
Bosch Super 4 Spark Plugs
Lowered Springs
15" - Alloys On Dunlop Tyres
INTERIOR GADGETRY
Red/White Toyota Shoulder Pads (Front)
Amagen Seat Covers (Front)
STEREO COMPONENTS
Clarion Tape Player
Kenwood 6x9's
Result of mods: Goes pretty well.. Really Responsive and has some power when you need it.
How much spent on mods: around 2.5k to 3K (conversion was around the 1.7/8K mark efi to carby)
Why have you done mods: 4AC had done a head gasket after already being replaced 2 months ago.. engine clocked 260Km's so it had the good life.. Time for something with more power
Target for police: Hmm.. maybe if i rev it. But other then that the visual apperance of the car is not great, typical 80 type car with a towbar and the radio arial fully extended
Is it worth it: I prefer my old 82 corolla rather then what some spolit teens have with their lancers/civics. 4K car can suprise those guys
Is it road legal: Looks like it
Why are mods popular: Depends what mods you look at.. i know a alot of people who claim they have a FULLY MODIFIED car (mostly fresh uni spoilt bums) the only thing you will techincaly see is a brand name muffler and the bodykit makes up 95% of the mods
I dont really saw modifications as popular.. some people can be into cars and use what money they have to enhance it, others cant really be bothered and go for something new or just leave what they have.
Other comments: An old highschool friend was talking to me about drifting.. he wanted to get a nissan and along those lines while he was talking were "man, drifting is so hard.. you need to have full control of the car and the turbo timer on.." i couldnt stop laughing in my head.. and i didnt correct him on what a turbo timer really does

Not if I drive sensibly
Quote: | 9. Is modifying your car worth the hassle and cost?

Yes
Quote: | 11. Why do you think car modifications are so popular and in what age groups?
|
It depends what you consider a modification..to me a big wing and some decals are not a mod, this seems to be a popular approach amongst 18- 25 yearolds but really its more an indication of the market availability of these parts to these age groups now days..when I was that age most items were manufactured by the owner and aftermarket parts werent as available so we concerntrated more on engine and suspension development. I think changing the handling and engine characteristics of a car usually come later in the age group now days as people who are genuinely interested start to learn more about what they can do over and above a big exhaust and cut springs.

Because guys like making their cars go better. Stats from the car club suggests early twenties.

I wouldn't really call them rice...
Like for instance, I just want my car to feel more 'comfortable'... I like the feel of a leather steering wheel, the seat covers were a b'day present and they are comfortable, the seat belt pads are because of my shoulder probs (After my accident), and the checker-plate bits were there when I bought the car so I'm just gunna leave them there...

1. 27.
2. Male (what else? )
3. '95 holden apollo
4. K&n panel filter, 55/65w inner+ 100w outer xeon gas bulbs, standard '97 camry hub covers. And a 14" replacement rim and wheel for the 15" that the stupid dealers left as the spare. Just for Singlecam, Mobile 1 oil, BP ultimate fuel, standard toyota auto transmission fluid, and the factory fitted NGK platnium plugs.
5. Result is cleaner + more air through the filter. I can see better at night. Plus I got to know how the bulbs get changed on my car, always a bonus since it was the first time I've had to deal with a semi-sealed system. IMO, whatever you do yourself, you can only gain in the area of experience. Even if you know how, you still gain that little more.
6. I dunno, not too much.
7. Because I can. And what I did was practical.
8. Hell no. Cops don't pick on standard looking camry's.
9. When I do some serious mods, then what I've done now will be worth it more, but right now, yes, because I've done practical things. I have nice bright highbeams, and I don't have to buy a replacement filter every 20,000 clicks. While I'm on that, anyone want a standard panel filter that has done 8000km's?
10. Yea, I think so.
11. I agree with what others have said about it's a hobby thing, and that it's for pulling the potential out of the car that the manufacturer had to skimp on because of practical financial costs to the intended market of the car. I can go on about rice stuff like lancer bodykits and crap, but I'm out of that age group. There seems to be an evolution as you get older as to what you do as well, in general that is, of course there are exceptions.
12. Everyone keep underestimating the camry please. It makes me feel better when I blow them into the weeds.
