KE20 brake upgrade, GIVE ME ANSWERS!!!! Wed, 18 August 2004 11:40 Go to next message
firstley, i've search so long for some answers my eyes hurt.
so i'd like it if you didn't tell me to do a search.

i need to know what cheapish upgrade can be done to a KE20 that is going to recieve a 20V?

I've heard of putting RA60 struts in without to much hassle, but then there might be a positive camber poroblem, is this right?
i need an answer soon as the question is driving me nuts.
what have people done, there must be someone with some easy answers

it's not really that easy. either change to a different strut, or adapt something.

on KE10, someone did a vented camira disc, but that requires redrilling, and requires either nuts, or a tapped plate behind the disc to hold it on. it is not a huge disc either but fits under 13" rims.

could also look toward S2 RX7 rear discs. i haven't had a chance to yet but it has correct stud pattern.

could also use S1/S2 RX7 struts.

just a few ideas Smile

stuart, what have you done to your rollas?

is it true if i put the RA60 struts and steering arms in there will be a postive camber problem?

hey mate,

in regards to ur ke20 brakes.

u can use ke70/55 disc and capilers. Virtually bolt on, only minor drilling and tapping.

except u need to use 13/14'' wheels to clear the calipers.

cheap and good upgrade, i was going this way on a ke10 with a mazda 12app.

i sold a conversion a while back to a guy in melb who i dont think ever used them.

ring peter roberston in Melb on 03 9544 1162

the bloke is a old corolla expert, mechanic and spare parts genuis.

and try pm'ing pro_ke as he is the guy who bought my brakes he maybe intersted in selling them if he didnt end up using them.

cheers paul

the way that I did mine (and I am not recommending it) is
1) fit Nissan 180B struts with 240K tops - I swapped left to right and swapped the springs back (after visiting them with a gas axe).
2) modded some nissan pintara 10" vented discs to fit the 180B hubs
3) bolted on some '95 HiLux calipers (use 1199? as opposed to 1149? pads)
4) made spacers for the brake pads (so pistons didn't fall out when pads are worn)
5) modded Kmac top of strut camber/caster adjusters
6) lengthened lower control arms by 10mm so as to get Zero camber (camber was a big issue)
7) Used Mitsubishi L300 master cylinder (modded pedal box and firewall)
Cool remote mounted PBR VH44 brake booster
9) made custom lines for the whole shooting match
10) fitted borg warner diff out back with skyline (HR31) discs

Fronts only are assisted
Car stops
Currently thinking of a better way to do it in future - like custom stub axles onto the corolla struts with perhaps VT commode calipers and discs.

i have unly used KE30/KE70 discs, which are only 218mm vs 200 for the KE20. this is 10% better stopping, but much better than drums!

i don't have a fast car, nor do i drive it fast, so i don't _really_ need the brakes like you will Wink

KE70 brakes only need 13" rims to clear them. apparently there are 2 types of KE70 backing plates tho, and only one bolts to KE10/20/30 strut.

maybe KE70 calipers bolt to KE30 backing plate? i will be finding out.

Cya, Stewart

ps, if you are adventurous, why not look at the S13 strut, as done with the AE86's... heck anything can be made to fit.. only issue is tie rod ends, and ball joints..
height of strut, shcoks and springs can all be changed.

Here is the upgrade I have done on a KE10,
http://www.geocities.com/earlyrolla/

You could do something similar to a KE20.

Still to sort out the master cylinder/boosting arrangement. Deciding on whether to run dual inline boosters or see if I can get away with small diameter master cylinders set-up with a bias bar arrangement.

I have a KE25 and just 2 weeks ago did a second brake upgrade on the front end of my car (it was only a cheap upgrade to improve over the first setup that was fitted).

Mmmkay. Original setup on my KE25 was 4 wheel drums Shocked

A TA22 brake booster and master cylinder are fitted to my car (booster is 2nd hand, master cylinder was purchased new).

The first brake "upgrade" was the fitment of RA28 celica discs (solid disc 254 or 256mm diamter) to KE30/55 hubs (pretty sure they are all the same??) and the use of the RA28 caliper mounting plate (only required the 4 mounting holes to be redrilled) all fitted to the KE25 strut. To fit the RA28 disc to the KE30 hub an adaptor was machined up which was bolted to the hub and the disc was bolted to the adaptor. This setup worked ok for casual driving but after being given a hard time it struggled to stop (solid discs and cheapo pads). This setup was on the car for nearly 5 years and was adequate enough to pass engineering inspections.

I wanted vented discs on the front end so my next step was to do a minor upgrade. It had to be cheap and effective and be able to run with the current brake master cylinder.

So after perusing the DBA catalogue for disc dimensions I settled on a Peugeot 306 disc (vented ,had to have it machined down to 258mm from 266mm) and ST162 Celica SX front calipers. A redrill of the existing (RA28) caliper mount and a redrill of the peugeot disc allowed it all to bolt together.

3 days after I got it all together I took it to a track day and they worked really well! Better pedal feel than the previous setup, better stopping power and they were able to complete full 20 minute track sessions (5 or 6 of them) without any fade whatsoever! (even after hitting over 200km/hr each lap down the straight and braking hard for the first corner). I know it's not a fantastic twin or four piston setup, but it certainly does the job at pulling up a 900kg car.

NB: the rear is still running commodore drums (it was meant to get discs at the time the diff was fitted but due to a number of fitment probs it had to run drums, but they have worked fine so far).

PM me you email address if you would like me to send you some pics of the setup before and after it's assembly.

Cheers,

Shane.

earlyrolla: in the article when you said, KE20 disc brake rotor hub, does that mean you just used the original KE20 strut complete?

i am currently looking at fitting mazda struts, to my ke20. there is a fella with a 10 sec ke20 in adelaide, he has fitted rx5 struts and all he had to do was drill out the l/c arm to take bigger bolts(this wouldnt have to be done if uing 808,early 929 etc), he used the ke strut top and it all bolted up. he also didnt have any huge camber problems. there are a number of brake upgrade kits for the mazdas, so if you can get the struts in there nicely, you can sort out which kit to choose from there.
