She's dead and I'm not a happy chappy!

Hi,
Well, am I pissed off or what@#$@#$@#$#$@!!!!!
Today I went to start the bitch and she's dead. She started perfect 2 days ago, but now she just makes a buzzing sound and the alarm even sounds sick.
I cannot disconnect the alarm 'cos it's one of those black-wire ones that's integrated into the wiring etc and I don't feel like ripping wires out. But, the alarm system has been in the car for over a month and it hasn't caused any probs whatsoever, so I don't think it's that. The battery is less than 1yr old and it's never given me grief. The lights weren't left on 'cos if any of the lights are on and the engine is stopped then a small chime keeps ringing.
I put the charger on the battery and it's been on for about an hour now and the amp reading is still zero. I would of expected it to jump to few amps and then slowly go down - assuming the battery is flat.
My wife's gone to work and taken her car, so I can't jump start it. I'm not in the NRMA anymore 'cos the few times I did require their assistance they looked at the car and shook their heads and said they couldn't help.
I'm scratching my head over this one and I need the car today 'cos its got an appointment at the suspension shop.
It knows! The bitch knows I need her and she's gone all nasty on me. I told it that if it don't start by midday it's gonna get torched for the insurance money - maybe that'll scare the moll into starting.

Hi,
Hmmm, good idea, but she's a lady and a non-beer drinking religous nut, otherwise it may be worth a go. Also, the car is in the garage and there's an evil slope up to the road and I don't fancy my chances of pushing it up hill, and she'll only roll down and crush me.
Ahhh... looks like I got a walk to Castle Towers and get me a Kmart battery. Don't fancy walking home with a car battery under my arm, but I think I've got little choice.
Major bummer!!!

Check that the terminals aren't oxidised - the oxide has a huge resistance and can cause problems. Clean both the terminals and the inside of the cable clamps and try again.
If that doesn't help, it may be one of the plates/cells in the battery has died. Do you have a multimeter to check out what the voltage is with the +ve disconnected ?
Each cell should give about 2 volts.
Also check the fluid level, and it should be about 1cm above the plates in each cell.
Good luck, as batteries are heavy to walk with !!!!

Hi,
Posts are clean and corrosion free.
I just metered it and she's stuffed. Looks like a cell has died, she's putting out just under 10 volt.
I get about 1 year service out of a battery. I've gone through 7 batteries in 8 years. I guess that's what happens when you drive your car rarely.
I called Marshalls home service, but they can't get here til midday and prolly cost more than getting a battery myself.
Well, I'm off to the shops. If you hear on the news tonight that a man in Castle Hill died of a heart attack carrying a car battery you'll know who it is.
It's funny now. I always seem to find humour in bad situations and I shake my head and smile. Lucky for me I ate some spinach last night!

How rarely do you drive it? It may be worthwhile disconnecting the battery when not in use (although this makes having an alarm a bit of a waste of time!). Even just starting it once week is better than nothing if you're not driving regularly. On the bright side, most batteries have a 2 year warranty. Make sure your next one does and if it dies after 1 year, replace it free of charge.

Hi,
Well, i drive it more lately - mainly 'cos I'm out of work at the moment and use it a few times a week.
However, before that it wasn't driven all that much. I filled the tank up a few days ago and it was the third time I've filled it this year!
It's 31 years old and has only 132,000k - so it's not like she's piling up the miles.
Yeah, I got me a new battery with a 2yr warranty and I'm gonna keep an eye on it. Crikey, I'm stuffed now - walking back from the shops with a battery under my arm is not my idea of a fun walk.

Um river.... any chance I can get a mention in your will just incase the news papers have to run that story??
How is the Alternator? that is pretty exessive use for batteries.
Oh yeah I've done the carry battery back to dead car as well.
Phew... the thread title scared me there for a second...

Hi,
It's alright Mr Lambo, it's just a battery - nothing major. Just annoyed that it was when I needed it most. I think there's a "critical need" detector in some things - like the photocopier that jams/breaks when you desparately need it - you know what I mean. My stupid parrot bit me and was having a spas attack and the car was dead and I lost a Panther in a very difficult wargame, so it all got to me today.
But I'm cool, now. The car is at the workshop getting its running gear, steering, brakes, suspension springs shocks,, blah blah blah all checked and fixed up to new.
Also got a deal on those 15x6 Soarer wheels. Hopefully I'll have them shod onto the car for the October show-off.
Anyway... now I'm gonna try and do some sweet talking to Gold28... I'm sure that his rear bumper looked hellishly like an RA25 rear bumper. Can't have enough spares, can you?

Yes his rear bar IS alot like an RA25's. there is a very good reason for that too.

Hi,
Frank Kleinig is my hero-freak! One of the jets (or venturis.. something like that) had fallen off and the gaskets were leaking and were rock hard. THe floats were shot and the engine used to splutter before 4000 rpm.
Now, however, it spins up to the redline without a problem. No stuttering, no missing... just smooth power all the way. She doesn't ping anymore and I can drive at 50k in 5th gear without a problem - used to only do that in 3rd gear!
Compression is perfect across all cylinders.
He also did plugs, points and timing. The dyno curve looks very nice. I'm gonna frame it It's now got a billion hp at a trillion rpm!
I love it! The car is so much more drivable now - it's like a new one. Can't wait to get the suspension and steering all done and that should make her hold the road like a fly on dog shit. Can't wait.
The new wheels will look smashing, along with some nice, fat lo-profile tyres.
The gearbox is my next thing. The diff is fine, but I'm gonna get it checked anyway. When that's all done I've only got to a little bit of internal trim to get fixed and new sound system put in. A dent fixed and a full respray and she'll be complete.
Hey, you know the clock in the TA22 has that little black knob on it to adjust the time. I need one, and the little screw that attaches it. Know of any?

it wouldnt happen to be resting over at Road'n'Race in Silverwater would it River?
Just saw a flash of a reddy/moron RA28 looking car as i drove past for lunch, the colour was very much the colour of your '25.
As for Frank - he is the man. If i wasnt going EFI i would be visiting him with a pair of Solex's and a wad of cash, NOTHING but hughe praise for the man.
BTW - if anothny wants, there is a straight RA28 bumper down at piccies last time i was there. It was dirty, but perfectly straight, then you can do a little "tradey tradey" for teh 25 bumper

Hi,
THE WITZL!!
Yes, the old girl is at Road and Race getting her underneath bits looked at and all sorted.
You're right about Frank. He's the man. I will take it to no one else now.
Yeah, I PM'd Gold28 and he said he'd like a proper RA28 bumper instead of the 25 model. So, I'll try and find one and see if he wants to do a swap.
The hardest spare bit to find is the bonnet. One went on eBay some months ago for a stack ... about $500 IIRC. So, I may have to get a fibreglass copy of mine. Still thinking that one over.
Crikey, how many of you dudes work at Silverwater? Rod was down at R&R today and checked the car also.

Hi,
Ahh, a Jaycar boy, eh? I walked past there today. I should of called in and said hi. Then go over the street and annoy Rod.
A few years ago Jaycar were selling off all this old stock and I rang the dude (at Silverwater) and made an offer which was accepted. I got a smashing load of shit for bugger all. Most impressed. I think I cleaned them out of all their old 8086/8088 processors and some other stuff. I can now sell these to NASA for their space shuttles.
Also, I used to go into the city store (York St) a lot and also the Parramatta store. Used to be a chick who worked at Parra - dark hair, sorta good looking in a strange way. Never paid her much attention until I saw up her skirt (accidently of course) and that picqued my interest.
Got heaps of Jaycar thingys.. freq counter, PIC programmer, solar panels and stacks of other kits and shit.
Haven't got any wire-wrap sockets or cable?
I know the guy who does your flyers and catalogues - he runs a small home printing/layout system.
Ohhh, I think I just hijacked my own thread. I'll have to ban and delete myself now.

Come round when you pick up your car... Peter takes his time with his suspension work so see you next Friday
Its worth the wait though.
That chick from Parramatta is Erika... we'll have to give her some shit tomorrow.
(At least I hope for your sake its Erika and not Nidale... mate mate mate mate mate)
If you think you've got a lot of Jaycar crap you should try working there... you tend to start too many projects that never get finished (or in some cases started)
This printing dude wouldn't happen to be named Brett would he?

Hi,
Friday! I hope you mean today and not next Friday. A week without my car could kill me! I'm like a dolphin out of water without my car. I'll have to look at Celica pictures for a week to keep myself alive! Still, I'm sure the car will come back from Peter and ride like its on tracks.
Poor Erika, assuming that's who it is. Don't give her shit 'cos if I turn up next week she'll give me the evil eye. There was also a muslim(?) chick I saw at Jaycar. Well, I think she's muslim 'cos she wears the head scarf. Chicks who are into electronics are rare - maybe even rarer than chicks who are into Celicas. You should look after them and nurture them.
Yes, the printing dude is Brett. Brett's brother is married to my wife's sister.
It is a freaky small world, and now that my car is going better and quicker, it's gotten a whole lot smaller.

The pulse adjuster kit is in production ATM.
I "think" we've got all the bits for it, Silicon Chip sent the finished article over on Thursday or Friday... Witzl is building a prototype so if she works as expected it should be out very soon.
